Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists
I would never buy/rent an apartment without heated indoor parking, even If I lived in the downtown core. Still needs me IKEA runs.

AffirmativeAre we talking IDS Crystal Court connections??Looks like Gap is finally closing, store half empty and a few bargains to be had, the lady said they're open until the 26th. This is a great space for an H&M:) Or better still, A ZARA!!!

Re: 729 Washington Av N
Love this plan, but the ramp is a bit of a travesty, I understand the need for parking, totally get it, but this is time for a little innovation please. Could they add another element like a condo building on top, or maybe office space? Future generations will not like us for that giant potential tu...

Re: Alatus Apartment Tower - (301 Washington Avenue South)
I honestly can't believe we have opposition to a building because it will limit sunlight to a covered ice rink that barely has any daytime use anyway. What are we talking about, three hours on weekend afternoons in the winter won't have sun on the southern edge of a skating rink? AGREED!!! Finally!...

Could the put the ramp under the park, or is that already proposed? Just wondering, seems to make the most sense to me.

Here's the video from that page (note that "pavement" is the British word for "sidewalk"): -vzDDMzq7d0 Someone else posted that on Google+ last week, and I think it did a good job of talking about shared space in general. I guess the project has gotten a significant amount of co...

Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)
I agree that the link between 20-somethings renting in downtown to 30-somethings raising families in owned properties downtown is probably overstated. One of the myths perpetuated on this forum is that Minneapolis is way out of wack by having urban neighborhoods that cater mostly to younger (or old...

Here's a study that was done in Europe: http://dc.streetsblog.org/2012/06/21/ex ... ver-buses/ But this is stated preference and not expressed preference, so who knows? The Overhead Wire post cites this article: http://www.publictransit.us/ptlibrary/TRB1221.pdf It was published in 1989 as best I ca...

Re: Downtown Retail News
West Elm has a new concept for urban dwellers called West Elm marketplace, it's a cafe and home store all rolled into one, you can grab breakfast or lunch then check out the items on sale, i think that would be a good fit here, or it would be perfect for Washington Avenue, a real neighbourhood draw ...

Helsinki, thanks AGAIN, linky is broke; not a station, but B E A U T I F U L http://www.blogforphotos.com/images/hdr-in-helsinki/helsinki-stockmann-aleksanterinkatu-hdr-777x504.jpg Hennepin is sooo busy, a train would just add to mess, and streets are complicated at Dunwoody. Isn't there a bus barn...

It need to be a year round farmers market like St Lawrance Market in Toronto (I think that was it's name). Visiting that market was such an ispirational experience, it wasn't only fresh produce, but great pantry items and rare foodie finds, places you could grab a bite and sit and eat or just wonder...

Re: What will it take to develop DTE?
I sometimes take a detour to drive through this neighbourhood, there are so many gorgeous town homes that remind me of parts of Boston or Glasgow. I would love to see more of these built and lots of renovation to the one's that are poorly managed. I don't think this area is suitable for skyscrapers ...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ
I'm not going to come anywhere near saying that anything in particular has destroyed anything, but it's come up in the Nicolet Residences thread about what makes an urban area, and it's not height, and it's not even density per se, it's activity (height and density contribute to that but at the cor...

Re: Nicollet Residences
It's really not tall buildings that make cities special and urban. Look at Paris and several neighborhoods of NYC as an example. It's density and streetscape that make a difference. We should not complain that buildings aren't tall enough. We should complain that our streets are too wide and fast, ...

Re: Nicollet Residences
I don't think they will have views of nothing, I think it'll be cool to be in the heart of it all, in amogst the tall buildings, that's very "New York" to me. I personally think people that will rent there will totally "get it" and totally enjoy the urban experience. Sounds FABUL...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ
This is fantastic news, I've always hated that ramp! Finally, that end of Nicollet will get new teeth, no more gaps!! I do hope they add some street level retail to it to add to the vibrancy for both the workers and the residence.

Re: Block E (Not casino)
I would LOVE to see something totally mixed-use so we don't depend on one entity in this space. It should be office (to gaurantee day time foot traffic), retail (to add to the vibrancy of the street and create security/eye's on the street), residential (to create a critical mass of invested citizens...
