Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)

Proves to show that many people don't know to how to read a map (which is pretty sad). Won't reverting back to the old bus network configuration be easier for most on-campus residents anyways? (as the Superblock will be closer to the Campus Connector and not just the East Bank Connector now)

Re: Twin Cities Underground Rail

I think the consensus would be underground rail only for a mile or a bit longer in the densest part of the downtown core under Nicollet, along with the making Blue Line underground between the Warehouse District and DT East/Metrodome stations later after about 15-20 years. But that would at least be...

Re: University of Minnesota

$600/month for a studio shared with one person is definitely not West Coast prices (at least compared to SF). I will admit that is pricey but there are always cheaper options if you live farther away and bike or take the bus. Many Minnesotans always seem to treat an increase in density like it's goi...

Re: Twin Cities Underground Rail

What about the relocation of utilities under city streets, I assume that would run up costs as well. Here are very crude illustrations (5 mins on MSPaint) of both underground LRT and at-grade streetcar with segregated track that could be a possibility: Short Tunnel Option under Nicollet Mall in DT C...

Re: Twin Cities Underground Rail

True on the financing part, there definitely needs to be an overhaul on financing in order to get stuff underground. I am all for public voting but I would still be worried the majority of suburbanites would support freeway expansion versus public transit improvements. Usually if I talk to people ab...

Re: Twin Cities Underground Rail

I hope so, it would be expensive but having a subway portion of LRT/streetcar in downtown I think would be the best for the long-term. If they are going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a tunnel, I'd rather see it down Nicollet versus a wooded area with a bike path. We could follow the pa...

Re: Super Talls

True (I personally wouldn't want to live in Brooklyn Park), but I doubt a building taller than 500 feet would pop up given their current HQ is 33 and 14 stories tall, so I think the tallest they would build would possibly match the height of the South HQ building (491 ft, which is close to 500 ft). ...

Re: Super Talls

Not really, because most if not all of the buildings taller than 500 feet here were built for large companies, and even if they weren't F500 they were at least a large business nationally. Even with expansion from a company like Target, the scale of expansion might be just a high-rise depending on w...

Re: Super Talls

I would be fine with something on the scales of 350 North Fifth (a 20 story office near Target Field would really look cool from the stadium, plus the commuter rail station could be integrated with the basement levels of the structure) and/or 1010 Nicollet getting built. They could always make it mi...

Re: Bloomington

East Bloomington is mostly on a grid street network, so I tend to tie terms like giant sprawling mess to suburbs like Eden Prairie (West Bloomington is sprawl-laden but is at least not as entangled as bad as EP). Bloomington in my opinion is one of the easiest suburbs to improve on given it's alread...

Re: ADM to Relocate Global Headquarters - MPLS in the Mix

Yeah the Asian market we need to expand on a bit, at least a couple more nonstops because the more articles I read about ADM's HQ move they talk about the difficulties flying from Decatur to places like Shanghai. It seems their main focus is to be in a place where it's easy to fly to major cities ar...

Re: ADM to Relocate Global Headquarters - MPLS in the Mix

MSP is a decent airport for international flights, but the fact is O'Hare has nonstops to most major world cities (at least in Europe and Eastern Asia) which is what ADM probably wants for their execs for overseas business meetings. Tokyo and Amsterdam do allow MSP to have fairly short stopovers to ...

Re: ADM to Relocate Global Headquarters - MPLS in the Mix

They were founded in Minneapolis, weren't they? It would be nice to see us recover for past losses of a few F500 companies in the past decade (Northwest, Honeywell, etc.). But since they want this to be a global center for operations, I think they will go with Chicago though. We are a agribusiness c...

Re: Northstar

I assume it's geared toward commuters who want to be distracted by Netflix or work stuff/e-mails on the way to work. I can see why it's on commuter rail, but if you are on the bus/light rail you are probably better off just using your phone especially if you are on a busy train/bus. As for the incre...

Re: The Interchange

It's close enough to downtown, but since Target Field Station is slightly closer I think most would just end up using that station. I can see the appeal for North Loop riders and possibly Southwest and Bottineau riders, but given the short spacing between the Interchange and TF stations, it just see...

Re: The Interchange

I started laughing when I saw that on the front page of the Strib today while loading newspapers. The Union Depot is closer to Grand Central, and even that is a very pale comparison. They could have spent the money towards a transit tunnel under Nicollet Mall, or at least towards a short at-grade sp...

They could have just built a bridge with 3 lanes on it, with the center lane being reversible. The Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver handles 60,000 - 70,000 AADT with just 3 lanes (albeit with heavy congestion, but at least it connects Northern Vancouver with the CBD - not just commuter and cabin town...

Re: Doran Dinkytown Development

I think people might get the wrong idea and think this is all part of some conspiracy ploy to tear down Al's, leading to more people to protest for a moratorium on development. At least that's the type of vibe I got from reading comments from the Dinkytown Not Megatown facebook page. They might get ...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor

We could have 2 tunnels, one under Nicollet Mall for routes serving the Uptown and NE areas, and another one serving the Chicago Ave corridor and North Minneapolis. Given as long as the overhead caternary wires have the same voltages (750 DC) and they are both using standard gauge rail, couldn't the...
