Looks like St. Paul wants to move the Dorothy Day Center (shelter, soup kitchen, etc.) to the area NE of Downtown, on the other side of the interstate. Phase 2 would be a redevelopment of the current site into apartments.

I'm pretty skeptical that this move is really motivated by what's best for the users of Dorothy Day...

Is this about just isolating Dorothy Day on an island between freeways and railroads?

That's honestly what I think. The new neighborhood is just government buildings and couple auto-related businesses, isolated away from the downtown area. It wouldn't be too difficult for them to expand upon their current space.

New Renderings:

There has got to be a better long term site for this than this little wedge...

While they're out raising 10's of millions for the DDC, why not raise a few more bucks and include an addition for the Union Gospel Mission Child Care Center? That would be a big step toward making Pedro Park a reality.

So that rendering is one building, of a two building campus or is that "two" in itself?

As noted in the General St Paul thread, they've broken ground. I drive by the site every day and have noticed that they're having to remove a lot of bedrock. At first I thought it was concrete from prior structures but the piles just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Not sure why they would have to dig down into bedrock so far? I can't see the place needing a basement to function?

There's a fairly substantial grade along 5th St so perhaps it's to level the whole plot with the lowest point at 5th, 6th, & Main Streets.

Thanks for your observation, then that would make some sense.

Is it too late to re-configure the streets around here? Connecting Smith directly to Exchange and eliminating all of the half-block "grid-change" streets is what I'm thinking, along with putting what's left of "Main" out of it's mis-named misery
