Re: Maintaining old houses

My 1960s vintage house we had the original windows + storms replaced with modern inserts. We did have one fail from the seal breaking, but overall are happy. With modern high efficiency glass you really don't need storm windows, and we are happy to get rid of the irritation of having to move two pan...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Good thing self-driving cars are just down the road. They'll provide the freedom that cars provide to people that can't drive conventional cars (or that just prefer the freedom to read instead of drive). There's as story in today's Strib that self-driving cars were approved to go completely driverle...

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Because as a society everyone subsidizes everyone else. You don't see me complaining about subsidizing the people that live in Otsego instead of Bloomington, or that make the choice to have kids (by far and away the most carbon intensive thing you could ever do). Or about how people from the city go...

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Sounds good to me, and while we're at it we can remove all the EPA mileage regulations that make cars more expensive too. I don't think that many people will want to spend $30,000 on a car without test driving it at a dealership, so the free market will keep them in business.

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Hard to see why I would want to order a car of Amazon like I would a new HDMI rather than going to a dealership where I can test drive them, but new car sales are not where they make their money. If you ever paid their shop rates or bought a part you know that's where they make their money. The expe...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I didn't say that you suggested building rail to every house in America. Just pointing out how ridiculous the idea that anything can replace private cars is, so we should be looking at other options to deal with climate change. Besides the options presented bringing American jobs back to hard workin...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Exactly what we need: another freeway to continue our dependence on roads, cars, and gasoline. At least until there's train service with private, individually ventilated compartments from every front to every other front door in the country. Are you suggesting we try to pave our way out of the clim...

https://www.startribune.com/rental-home-neighborhoods-offer-new-twist-in-suburbs/572633721/ (Paywalled) So neighborhoods of single family houses that are all rentals are becoming a thing. I see this as remaining a niche market, but it's easy to see why it appeals to certain people since you don't ha...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

If paying employees some arbitrary figure that is more than what their labor is worth made good business sense companies would be doing so without government making them. Now if you're a poor person in say Hopkins rather than drive your $1000 car to Wayzata and park for free, now you have to pay to ...

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Douglas to Lake St)

So the idea of a RYG right turn arrows could work, but again there's things to think about 1) You would need to provide right turn lanes, otherwise we're in the same situation we're trying to solve by banning left turns, where a driver is unable to make a turn for a substantial amount of time, so st...

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Douglas to Lake St)

If it did turn out to be a real problem, we could just change the lights to have only straight arrow/right turn arrow, instead of full green, and then it would be completely unambiguous. (As a bonus, this also makes it easy to implement a leading pedestrian signal). Green arrows are only allowed wh...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

I've seen multiple sources rank flying at 5/10 or so as far as risk. Here's one: https://www.kltv.com/2020/06/11/medical-experts-rank-activities-by-covid-risk-level/ Presumably that applies to other shared public vehicles like buses and trains. I have $500 in vouchers and miles that expire at the en...
