Re: Dismantling Downtown Freeways

I'm just speculating, after all buildings are heaver than grass, but to further speculate it's probably more of an economical thing than an absolute thing. If you want to build Prudential Center over the Mass Pike in Boston it's entirely different economics than a five story mixed use in Rondo. Also...

Re: Dismantling Downtown Freeways

Buildings are heavy, and it would take a lot thicker concrete and steel beams to support buildings as opposed to grass. However you can build buildings right up to edge of where the freeway is underneath as opposed the typical grass slope.

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

I agree with this as far as it should have been two stations, except I will note that the city has been trying to get rid of the surface airport parking lots for years. They want some more intense development with structured parking for both the airport parking and whatever the development is. The p...

I love Eden Prairie...

If I had more money and wasn't attached to the family house located elsewhere it would be towards the top of the list of places I'd want to live.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

It's certainly bad all over, but the impacts are far more noticeable downtown (as in impactful on the quality of life). Basically the draw of downtown is the things that have been crushed as a result of the pandemic (walkable vibrancy). The 'draw' of Eden Prairie doesn't change all that much even i...

It's going to be a mix of studio or "alcove" "micro" units (total 164) from a single 350 or 400 square foot room bay and larger ( total 65) units made of combining two or in a few cases even three room bays. The 80% units are technically "market rate" and the developer is not seeking incentives for ...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

My own feeling is a freeway shouldn't be 60 unless it has 1 mile interchange spacing and interstate standard lane widths and shoulders. For a while we were building non-interstates to that standard, see Highway 100 through the northern suburbs. But now we've gotten away from it and sometimes are eve...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

At the same time there was a new FHWA requirement that the HOV / toll lanes be signed as "Express Lanes" and must indicate who is allowed to use the lanes at the current time. This essentially meant that electronic signs had to replace the fixed signs. MnDOT installed DMS signs about every other exi...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I wouldn't term it as "significantly in excess" in the era of higher speed limits. The example that pops into mind is most of the Wisconsin approach to St. Croix Crossing has a 65 mph posted speed and a 70 mph design speed. The variable speed limits were advisory only and MnDOT dropped them when a s...

So, my understanding is now that fomite transmission is a red herring (so we can stop worrying about elevator buttons), there's two main ways of transmission: 1) Carrier sneezes / sings / coughs / yells on someone spewing massive quantities of droplets. Mitigation for this wearing cloth masks, plexi...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

I don't doubt that there's a lot of truly abandoned cars around. My stepfather used to do "buy here pay here" with his used car dealership and he'd regularly get notices that a car he had a lien on had been towed and impounded. So he'd try to contact the owner and if he could locate them at all, he ...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

You'd also have to ban left turns throughout much of the corridor, or else replace bumpouts and parking with new left turn lanes. Not saying this is a bad thing or unworkable, but something to be considered. Based on my observations, Lake Street is already a de-facto single through lane due to the a...

What indication is there that every property will have an ADU? Just because you're rich enough to buy a huge lot and are permitted to build an ADU doesn't necessarily mean you want one.

No, the pandemic won't last forever, and I noted as such in my post. But companies don't want to be caught unprepared with buildings that have no provisions for contactless pickup in case we have another one. And as I noted a lot of people are going to stick with habits they learned. "Less likely fo...

The facts in Floyd don't really support a third degree murder charge so a second degree murder conviction could be the result of a jury trial- jurors won't have the option of splitting the difference like you would with a plea. Chauvin's actions were directed at one specific, identified person, wher...

The takeaway seems to be that using Broadway east of Penn was a no-go for a huge kaleidoscope of reasons, so then and probably now what's left is to figure out the best way to run it down Oliver, Penn, or Queen.

So I'm incorrect in my understanding that if something is not allowed by zoning, it doesn't lose grandfather status if the structure is destroyed? That's ostensibly why Kraus Anderson put up a lot of fuss about Southtown being rezoned for higher density, they wanted to be able to build another strip...
