Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

So what kind of travel times for a high speed transcontinental line can we expect vs just taking a plane?

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

I've seen multiple sources rank flying at 5/10 or so as far as risk. Here's one: https://www.kltv.com/2020/06/11/medical-experts-rank-activities-by-covid-risk-level/ Presumably that applies to other shared public vehicles like buses and trains. I have $500 in vouchers and miles that expire at the en...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Apparently people are as scared to be put next to strangers in a sealed metal compartment for hours at a time on the ground as they are to be put next to strangers in a sealed metal compartment for hours at a time in the sky. I'm seeing all kinds of online ads now all of a sudden about how "safe" tr...

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

I really like the looks of this one. Proof you don't have to resort to cornices, pillars and arches with randomly placed elevations with throwing darts at an elevation plan on the wall to see which of a dozen exterior finishes to apply to a given section in order to make something look better than a...

Stillwater Loop Trail time lapse. Still figuring out this video editing thing and I wasn't able to render it in 4K because I haven't registered the editing software yet.

So what went on behind the scenes? The streets.mn board decided they wanted to integrate it, then abruptly changed their mind and decided they want nothing whatsoever to do with it?

I'd like to see Google Street view take 3D images for viewing in VR headseats. The birds-eye views are absolutely stunning in VR.

Re: Hillcrest golf course redevelopment site

Good thing we're talking about light industry instead of an oil refinery or a strawman factory or something then. Oil refineries have no place in city neighborhoods, so it's a good thing both of the ones in Minnesota are far from any kind of neighborhood Seems like there's lots of complaining about ...

Re: Daymark Uptown (Sons of Norway site) - 3014 Holmes Ave S

The rotunda isn't as ridiculous as putting 19th century styled cornices on a 21st century building. I don't mine the three exterior finishes since it looks like they're using them to break up the facade rather than to try to fake history.

The "Unicorn Puke" aesthetic again. when technology gets cheap it gets misused. It seems every gaming PC now has every component light up with strobing RGB rainbows. In the old days if you wanted a color wash you used tinted incandescents, which weren't very saturated, or those with a dichromatic co...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

I'm not sure the issues with Hiawatha were as much side vs center running as having preemption on a very heavily traveled corridor, then having too redo it when the speed of the train changed. One of the councilmembers of the area came on streets and said he was going to get a consultant to install ...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

There could be a specific reason to live in St. Michael even if you could buy an equivalent house farther in- maybe lower crime, better schools, or family in the area. But maybe they just bought the house decades ago before getting the job. If I got a job at Medtronic I'd just suck it up and commute...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Yes, and I'd add "being able to get a house instead of an condo" would be a big one to add. Although I guess some people might like the act of commuting for most people I'd say it's a means to an end, generally being able to afford more desirable housing. I'v always taken jobs in the south suburbs t...

So the 2016 deadline for toll road interoperability came an went in 2016. Back in 2015 I asked MnDOT about, who responded basically "We'lll be ready when the feds make us". At the time they were replacing their single channel readers with multi-channel to enable the orderly phaseout of the active Te...

I've never really had that issue. At 4:30 I leave the "office", the third bedroom in my house, and don't enter it again until 8:00 AM. I won't even use the room for non-work stuff because I've had enough of doing real work stuff in there during the business day. My personal laptop is on the sun porc...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

^^^ I think that's really the gist of it. I can see someone from Eden Prairie taking the Green Line once in a while to a Wild game. I don't see a lot of people taking it to their job in downtown St. Paul because you would have had to have been a masochist to live in Eden Prairie and take a job in St...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Well, I rode it from 24th Ave station to downtown St. Paul for Union Depot's train days. Part of it was to show my sister the light rail, but I'd consider doing it for a Wild Game rather than having to pay event parking rates in downtown St. Paul.
