Re: Minneapolis Street Design

I am in no way an expert, but here are two pieces that lay out some differences: https://www.firerescue1.com/fire-products/fire-apparatus/articles/north-american-vs-european-fire-apparatus-breaking-down-the-differences-zsiTPu2O7PZokQVp/ https://www.fireapparatusmagazine.com/fire-apparatus/fire-appar...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis LRT Tunnel Discussion

If the problem is conflict between cars and LRT in the downtown core, isn't the solution just to ban cars from the downtown core? There are examples of cities larger and smaller than Minneapolis making their downtowns car free, and they have all been successful (I think). I mean, why even mess with ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

Homelessness is a separate issue from crime and it's extremely counter-productive to lump them together as a single item.
You are 100% right. I shouldn't have repeated that. It is harmful and I should know better. Thank you for pointing it out.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

Certain Democrats are so eager to point out statistics that crime rates really aren’t that different, but all the homeless encampments, reports of aggressive cell phone theft rings and locked up toothpaste at Target tell a much more compelling story. I think this is it exactly! The numbers show tha...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

Most people in poverty, like everyone else, pay for what they need You're absolutely right. I certainly don't want to contribute to the idea that poor people are criminals, there is enough of that already. I guess what I find frustrating is that I see plenty news outlets write about "theft-rin...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

That can be independent of the analysis our current legal system that locks people up for the wrong stuff... I don't think it can be. Situations like this are about how our current legal system operates in practice. Any solution we propose absolutely MUST be dependent on our analysis that our curre...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

I'm certainly not against the idea of throwing every last criminal in jail where they belong. Right now we don't have enough police and our criminal justice system isn't harsh enough that stealing the toothpaste is a bad option, so the only alternative is for Walgreens and Target to lock it up I kn...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

One of the worst and most well-known crimes in MN history happened in the St. Michael area.
What crime are you referring to? I grew up in the area and I'm curious about what you mean.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

I am not okay with the parking near the coffee shops, even if restricted, for a couple of reasons. First of all, I think continuous bike lanes are important so that drivers and cyclists can predict each others behavior. While I may be comfortable merging into moving traffic on a bike, many younger o...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Reminder:
There is a public meeting tonight at Longfellow Park (3435 36th Ave S) concerning the proposed 38th Street bike lanes. Meeting starts at 6:30. Definitely come and support bicycle infrastructure, especially if you live in greater Longfellow.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

I stopped by to talk with the owner today. She is concerned about both the loss of parking along 38th Street and the ability to park her delivery trucks there. I got the impression from a Facebook "discussion" that Fireroast cafe (37th Ave and 38th Street) is going to try and get the bike ...

Re: Farmers Market Soccer Stadium

I guess my previous post should have specified that I was responding to this: If this were to happen, I'd want to see a pretty substantial plan for redeveloping the entire Farmers Market / West Loop / Royalston Station area, including relocation of the Farmers Market to the Yard/Armory. I agree comp...

Re: Farmers Market Soccer Stadium

The Farmers' Market is one of my favorite places in Minneapolis. It attracts a large group of people from a variety of backgrounds on a daily basis for 8 months out of the year. It is the largest open air market in the Upper Midwest and it is on my list of must visit places for visitors. I believe a...

I think it would be hard to argue for Minneapolis spending any money on improving the skyways as long as they remain privately owned. Maybe a few key corridors of skyway could be made into truly publicly owned spaces with the city handling improvements, maintenance, and security. Maybe the city coul...

Re: Minneapolis Skyway System

I think the skyways, with all their flaws, are some of our most vernacular architecture. That makes me hesitant to call for their removal. I do believe they could be vastly improved by better street connections and a way-finding system.

Re: Southside - General Topics

Does anyone know what the plan is for 2629 30th Ave South? I went by yesterday and the Hauenstein & Burmeister building is rubble. Google tells me they have moved to Washington Ave North.
