The article on CNBC focuses on what we are doing "right." It's a good read if you want to feel good about us!

Re: Upper Mississippi -- No Locks For You

This must be hard for the businesses that do still use barges. Has anyone looked at the economic impact on those businesses? The one that immediately comes to my mind is Marshall Concrete at Lowry and Marshall...I know they get their sand hauled in on barges. And when you look across the river, you ...

Re: Stucco (Portland Cement) Houses

I didn't know we have so much more stucco than other places. Some houses, at least, have had their clapboard either replaced with or covered over with stucco. One such covered-over house is in the Wedge and the new owners used NRP funds to restore the original clapboard exterior. That's a good poin...

Re: 2316-2320 Colfax Apartments

Really, Lander is willing to pay $600,000 for the land, since he is going to tear the house down. Add $350,000 for the property next door. Someone (Nicole) would have to come up with $950,000 for the two buildings. I hope that Mr. Crow would reject any offers that are less than this. They his proper...

And one of the candles from their vigil accidentally burns the historic house down. That would be the icing on the cake.

Re: The Pedestrianization of 29th Street

Bike path and light rail/streetcar running from the Southwest Corridor to the Hiawatha line in the trench with grass and sidewalks instead of 29th...now that is what a world class city would look like! I hope Minneapolis withholds municipal consent on SW until they get guaranteed funding for one of ...

Re: 2316-2320 Colfax Apartments

It would be interesting to see what the "preservationist" reaction would be if a group like the Clare House (residences for HIV positive individuals) or YouthLink (for homeless teens) offered to purchase the properties and use them without demolition. There is obviously nothing wrong with ...

Re: Southwest Minneapolis Teardown Moratorium

The City also agreed to tear down a perfectly good 30-year-old stadium and then gave a billionaire $150 million of its residents money in order to build a shiny new one. But if a family of five wants to replace a 900 square foot tearddown with no useful life remaining in order to build a new house t...

Re: Southwest Minneapolis Teardown Moratorium

I don't think a builder/Realtor had that site at the ready...this really did blindside everyone. Realtors have been scrambling to get ahead of this (they sent out a mass email yesterday to inform everyone of the moratorium and what they hope to do to overturn/amend it). I have spoken to a couple of ...

Southwest Minneapolis Teardown Moratorium

I am surprised this hasn't been posted yet: http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/249089251.html I hadn't heard of this even being a possibility before the moratorium was instituted last Friday. Councilperson Palmisano indicates that every project has met zoning and code criteria, but she is ...

And that is just what we see on the outside. Just think of the moisture behind the cladding and inside the walls. And now that these are all stick-framed, you are talking serious damage.

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

In all seriousness, what is the end game here? It seems that so many different parties (cities, neighborhood, corporations) want so many different things, and with each new thing it gets more ridiculous and more expensive. I'm not sure if I agree in the idea of the Met Council (the whole taxation wi...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

I know the 3A versus 3C argument has been done many, many times on this forum. But seriously, if they suddenly decided that 3C was the route, wouldn't all of this be irrelevant? Build 3C, start working on Bottineau, and we can have a real transit system within the next decade. The way this is playin...

Re: Theater Garage Marquee Apartments - (Franklin & Lyndale)

In my opinion, the greatest obstacle to rejuvenating this intersection is the Vision Loss Resources building. It has huge, blank walls that face Lyndale and Franklin, and a horrible loading dock facing Lyndale. The property is over two acres, which stretches along Lyndale to the bridge area. I know ...

Re: Theater Garage Marquee Apartments - (Franklin & Lyndale)

I was not at the meeting, so I'm not sure if he mentioned it (or if it is important), but the developer actually lives in the Wedge. He mentioned that during another meeting when he was proposing the single-story retail project across from the Trader Joe's proposal on 27th and Lyndale. Master did a ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

If you truly believe in "equity opportunity," then this money should be spent elsewhere. North High's graduation rate is less than 50%. There are vacant buildings on almost every block in North, and some blocks have several. We all know the crime situation, whether perceived or factual. To...

Re: The Pedestrianization of 29th Street

How can you not think it is absurd? What could five people making 80K per year study for 365 days? It is going to cost X to repave the street, Y to tear it up and plant sod. If I got three estimates for each, it might take me (alone) a day to figure out the best option. You're greatly simplifying w...

Related to this, in the past couple of months there has been quite a few teardowns along Robert through West Saint Paul, there is a bit of land that is now open for redevelopment, although this street is an exhibit of a suburban strip through the decades. They do seem to be encouraging more street ...
