Re: Car Sharing / Rental (Car2Go, HourCar, etc.)
HourCar was definitely a concept that made more sense before Uber/Lyft. Still, sad news. I got quite far down the path of trying to start a college-oriented car sharing organization about 20 years ago, and the HourCar folks at the time were very helpful.

Not sure if this Mesabi Metallics steel mill will be vaporware or will turn into reality, but I'm curious how it could affect freight transportation in the Twin Cities.

When is the last time there was a rail customer on this segment between Port of Savage and Lakeville?
I remember a lumberyard near 143rd in Burnsville. That may have been it.
Speaking of Lakeville, I'm not sure if there are any customers north of Airlake. The Despatch factory on 207th and ...

The only thing stopping Nicollet or Hennepin from true urban success is another block-sized megaproject with lots of public funds. Works every time.

For those with a grasp of this situation... Why did the CDD create so much turmoil and reshuffling of schools but not prevent this major budget issue now? Did they not actually cut much back then? What was the point?

I know there have been concerns about large floor plates interfering with residential conversion viability on sites from Duffey Paper to the Dayton's or Baker blocks. Could it be viable to reuse old buildings with datacenter in the core and residential around the perimeter?

Minneapolis mayor proposes millions in cuts, over 100 job cuts and 11.3% property tax increase
That would be the biggest property tax increase in Minneapolis in at least 26 years. The owner of a median-valued home of $351,400 would pay $409 more a year.

At least from my days working downtown, the skyways also stratified the population - it was rare to see vagrancy in the skyway, something that made it more comfortable for the office worker crowd.

Re an at-grade ped crossing at 4th St, no way - railroads are highly oppositional to new grade crossings of any kind. I've been working to try and add a MUP crossing next to an existing BNSF highway crossing and it's a nightmare. In a nearby city, BNSF policy required closure of two at-grade ...

Honestly maybe that's not the worst use for the inner floorplates of large downtown buildings, if it comes with better streetfronts, more residential, etc.
