Re: University of Minnesota

I see it, but it's for 813 University, an old apartment building, not the new luxury ones. However, The Station appears to be having some trouble filling up for its first year as well. This bodes pretty poorly for the luxury student housing market, if the existing ones are having trouble filling, an...

Re: Opus Dinkytown Project - (14th Avenue SE & 5th Street SE

I hope you were a level above the "That's cool, I guess," said Chemistry sophomore Bob Loblaw. level of like 75% of quotes used in Daily articles. Might not matter. I was interviewed by the Strib about the Sally's development a few months ago. I made several insightful comments about the ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

I agree with Cam Winton's position on reevaluating 3c, but it's hard to know whether he's interested in better transit or just derailing the train all together. This might fall into the category of the Cato Institute (etc) arguing for buses over trains, and then turning around and working to cut fu...

Re: Minneapolis Energy Muncipalization

It isn't on the ballot yet. The CC will vote whether to put it there on Friday, I believe. Soon, in any case. The problem with having it on the ballot for this election is that this is the only chance the public has to vote on it. After that, it's entirely in the hands of the city council. And the e...

Re: Minneapolis Energy Muncipalization

Doing some research, it looks like SMUD, the Sacramento Power utility, charges about 10 cents per kWh in the summer, whereas my recent electric bill shows that Xcel charges about 11 cents/kWh. SMUD charges a $12 base fee, Xcel charges ~$15 in base fees. Your 50% cost savings must be coming from decr...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)

For those that want to participate, it sounds like the hearing is at city hall next Thursday at 10 am. The Minneapolis Chamber is encouraging people to come and voice their concerns as they, themselves are opposed to this and will be expressing their concerns for (in their own words) this needless ...

Re: Minneapolis Energy Muncipalization

Full Disclosure: I'm interning at Xcel Energy this summer. I don't like the concept of a for-profit utility, though, and I'd probably support the municipalization if it made any sense for Minneapolis, which it doesn't. All opinions are my own, and I can't vouch for the absolute accuracy of my data....

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)

Given that Xcel is the largest wind provider in the nation, and just proposed a new wind farm as big as the Monticello nuclear plant, to start construction, I'm curious exactly what strides you want them to make, especially keeping in mind that they have to be able to power the system even when the ...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)

It's not about the midrise, it's about the 8th largest employer in downtown. And about the stability of the city power grid. And about whether the city can afford to buy billions of dollars worth of infrastructure. But that's best saved for the new thread. On this topic, I'm wondering if the city co...

I was going to ask you guys on the bridge last night if you knew about UrbanMSP, but I got sidetracked by something (probably a bus) and never did. Looks like the answer was yes.

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)

Yep. I went to an informational meeting about the municipalization debate today, and they mentioned that no major utility has headquarters outside its service area, for obvious reasons. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Re: Mystery Washington Avenue Tower - (301 Washington Avenue

Honestly, I'm mostly psyched that it's more than six stories. I'm sick to death of six story stick structures. Or SSSSs, if you will.
