Re: Star Tribune Blocks

What would fill the fourth block in that scenario? The park we've heard about?

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

Mini. It appears to be the same model, if not the exact same crane, as was used for Stadium Village Flats last year.

Re: Dinkytown

Editorial from the Strib. Doesn't actually take a firm stance on the issue, but points out the fallacy of acting like this specific project will destroy the "small-village feel" of an area that already contains a suburban style McDonald's and a 20-story apartment tower.

Re: Physics and Nanotechnology Building

I haven't walked that way since the end of the semester, so my memory's a little hazy, but while there is still a space there, I don't think it's wide enough to put a full street back in. I'm sure it'll get paved and the Akerman Nice Ride station will get put back, but I don't think it'll be open to...

Re: Dinkytown

Having read the Facebook argument, a small part of me wants this project to go through just to stick it to all the people who are getting into snits that a student neighborhood isn't exactly the same as it was 40 years ago. Most of me wants it to go through because it'll be good for the area, and ho...

Re: Dinkytown

I would very much miss the businesses, but I'm scoffing at the idea that the House of Hanson building is historic and worth saving. Also, I don't get why they seem to be implying that this building wouldn't have first floor retail, given that Sydney, 1301, the Dinkydome, the Chateau, and the buildin...

Re: Green Line (Central)

Got this bulletin from the Met Council today. No news in it, I don't think, but it's a cool summary of how much is really going on along the line.

Re: University of Minnesota

Gosh now I feel old for graduating in 2008. Does the U of M not do faculty interviews or essays? Seems like it would almost be easier to get into a private liberal arts school where things like essays, references, or interviews can get you to stand out. Nope. You send in the app, and they accept yo...

Re: Nic on Fifth - (455 Nicollet Mall)

The ramp will get torn down in 2014, to make way for Xcel's new HQ building. I'd assume they'll use it up until that point, though they may not bother connecting that skyway stub unless that's where they plan to put the skyway anyway.

^ This. People are acting like they're going to be building a busy highway through here. It's going to be one train every two hours or so.

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

I would think that, for landscaping work, the work trucks could park on the rails themselves, which they're already doing for the median fence installation on the blocks that are open to traffic. The current holdup seems to be installing storm drains on the inner side of the bus lanes.

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

A 6 story building is GENERALLY the tallest a developer can go with "stick" frame construction (or wood instead of concrete or steel). Since (apparently) wood is the cheapest form of construction material, it's ideal for developers to keep heights below the threshold where wood could no l...

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

My friend that works in PTS told me that Washington will be open for bikes for spring semester. She didn't mention buses, but I don't know if that's because it won't be open for buses, or if she just doesn't know/care. (She's the ZAP student coordinator, so she's kinda bike-focused.) My (optimistic)...

Re: Amundson Hall Addition

The inventor of Gore-Tex just donated $10 million to this expansion, which, along with the $5 million Dow donated last year, puts the project at more than 50% privately funded.

Not that it'll happen anytime soon, but I'd lay money on that being the next lot to be redeveloped on Washington.

Wow. That'll get kinda confusing, having two student-focused buildings both called "The Station".
