Re: Gentrification
One last observation as I look at this CURA report one more time - looks like about 80 percent of the census tracts where they report gentrification saw poverty rates increase since 2000. Not to beat a dead horse but it just seems very clear that what we're seeing is income effects, probably citywid...

(Strange moment here at 37:50 where Cano and the crowd try to figure out whether the Minneapolis budget is $1.3 million or $1.3 billion: https://www.facebook.com/peopleforalond ... =2&theater)

Re: Gentrification
One new concept for me at the forum was the idea of "exclusionary displacement," which is displacement that ostensibly takes place when low-income people of color can't move into a new neighborhood because housing costs in that neighborhood are too high. And hey, if "exclusionary disp...

Re: Gentrification
CM Cano held a forum on gentrification tonight, from which my main takeaway was that she's going to try to institute rent control which is... well, counterintuitive.

Re: Gentrification
So we did look at what caused the decline in incomes, and the answer seems to be a combination of real income stagnation and decline, geographic sorting - middle-class black families flee concentrated poverty and move to the suburbs like middle-class families of all stripes - and, yes, a large numbe...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
Broken tail lights enforcement is unproven as a safety scheme. Broken tail lights is not even in the same level of violation as speeding or red light running. At. All. I'm very uncomfortable with extremely low level violations like this used as a pretext for more. This is very much at the core of w...

Re: Gentrification
Muddled, more like. I agree that there are major issues with some of the so-called affordable housing being produced in Frey's ward but there is just no evidence of the wide-scale displacement that she's talking about. The Crossroads affair is big news precisely because it's so unusual. The issue is...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion
Good results at the city convention - should send a pretty strong message to ed reformers trying to muscle in with Bloomberg et al. footing the bill.

Re: Urban/Suburban Lifestyle
Minneapolis and Saint Paul (particularly Minneapolis) have a bimodal distribution of housing affordability, with extremely disproportionate shares of housing affordable at very high and very low incomes, and fairly large shares of housing affordable at lower incomes. But there's a pretty big shortfa...

It's not actually very mysterious why millennials will probably move to the burbs as they get older and wealthier.

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
The testimony of the party-goers and EMTs (here: http://www.hennepinattorney.org/~/media/Attorney/NEWS/2016/jamar-clark-case/bca-reports-1-122.pdf?la=en) is surprisingly consistent about the events prior to Schwarze and Ringgenberg's arrival: there was a fight between a second couple, and then it se...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
I don't think so. They arrived, spoke to him for less than a minute, then tackled and shot him. That may not be criminal, but it's bad policing and I think it's exactly what Freeman was talking about on deescalating. I don't think the less-than-a-minute thing is necessarily all that telling - the c...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
Lots of evidence here: http://www.hennepinattorney.org/news/news/2016/March/jamar-clark-decision?platform=hootsuite I haven't poured over it, but my impression of what Freeman showed at the press conference was of a pare of cops who arrived on the seen and quickly escalate to the use of force to tr...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
And I guess the other thing I'd say is that a lot of this is probably the fault of the media - they facilitate it by giving more press to the one-off disputes than systemic critiques. But I'd strongly disagree that the correct response is to give the papers easily-packaged controversies over faceboo...

MPLS BLM still hasn't made a peep about housing segregation but they're sure upset about this tasteless placemat: http://www.startribune.com/joe-s-crab-shack-apologizes-for-photo-of-public-hanging-of-a-black-man/371808201/ Jesus Christ. Re: Presidential Election 2016
It's almost like that sort of backdoor politicking is a tricky and unreliable process that backfires as often as not, especially when dealing with people like Sanders, Trump, or Cruz that come from outside the party infrastructure.

Did you not pick up on the fact that I'm barely a Bernie supporter at all? I'm only caucusing for him because I'm so frustrated with the Clintons. But yeah, victim complex and all. My comment was directed more generally at the tone in this thread, not specifically at you. I'd be happy to have Berni...
