The Strib is reporting a spokesperson said six.
As the incumbent and Hodges is always a threat to win, because of name recognition if nothing else. But man, does she ever have a lot of weird personnel issues on both the official and campaign side.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
For me, Frey's alliance with Alondra Cano disqualifies him for mayor. I was on the fence between Frey and Hodges, even leaning Jacob's way after he reached out to me before the convention, but no longer. I like Frey a lot as a person, but I always felt he couldn't fully be trusted as mayor. Some of...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
I don't really follow. Clearly the party still may endorse if it chooses, and clearly that endorsement carries significant weight in many instances.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
At the end of the day, I think you either have a total electoral free-for-all with a minimal party role - which doesn't serve progressive ends, is tactically probably a loser, and puts activists on equal footing with people who barely engage - or you have a party system in which a subset of particip...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Look, I grew up somewhere without anything resembling Minnesota's system. It was just primaries and then a general. And politics, as a consequence, was a realm untouchable by mere mortals, in which it took decades to actually make an impact beyond simply voting. Community political participation, co...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
"Filing into a voting booth once every four years and ranking three candidates" is a pretty constricted view of democracy, IMO.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Same problems arise? It still has the net effect of making politics more inaccessible. Plus, disempowering parties kind of moves politics towards this populist, plebiscitary system, which I am far from certain would produce better elected officials.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
The convention was a nightmare, but contra conventional wisdom on here, it's not clear to me that a primary is a significantly more participatory process. Younger voters and party activists are, if anything, less represented in a primary (at least proportionally) and candidates aren't forced to enga...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
I'm a one-issue voter - housing segregation, and what we're going to do about it - and I've made a point of trying to speak to each candidate and asking their plans. Thus far, Frey is unequivocally the strongest candidate on the issue. He and Hoch were the only candidates who clearly identified fair...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
Two factors: -AMI is regional, meaning that keying maximum rents to AMI does basically nothing in very poor neighborhoods. -There's still the problem of getting anyone to actually pay a high rent for an apartment in a poor neighborhood, but that dissipates if most of your tenants are Section 8 vouch...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
WHS, your claim that the units are costing more than market rate is not true. I decided that since this is a major shortcoming in housing policy that's not commonly understood, I should write up my response in a more robust way: http://blog.opportunity.mn/2017/05/affordable-housing-isnt-affordable....

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
many words Thanks for this, I found it a very thoughtful exploration of the underlying issues, especially about people's preferences. It's very easy - on both sides! - to let the conversation turn into a debate about what to do about three or four neighborhoods, and forget that the very vast majori...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
I think there's a broader point there too. The dreaded G word (to the extent that it's a thing) is coming toward some of these areas, and perhaps not all that far in the future. Building affordable housing there now may look like concentrating poverty, but it might not in five or ten years for area...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
WHS, your claim that the units are costing more than market rate is not true. I have data. It's true. Your research with Orfield needs to look beyond your narrow view point that affordable housing in and for poor communities is inherently bad. I'm concerned with building affordable housing where it...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing
Question for anyone. What's your current thinking about new affordable housing (i.e. restricted by AMI) within existing areas of concentrated poverty? Particularly in areas of particularly deep poverty, where the average median income is already less than 30% of AMI? Is this just further concentrat...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
NLP's got some serious problems as a candidate, to put it mildly. And her social justice credentials are far from unimpeachable - Dehn's been much more consistent on that front. Some of her campaigns and causes have been outright shady.
