Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

It may not have the speed yet, but it would still be nice to have frequent, all-day service along the corridor instead of what we have now.
If they can't reach the planned speeds, then they would need more buses and more drivers to meet the original frequency. That might not be possible.

Re: Avenues- Replace Numbers With Names

Another idea is to extend the tree name theme east from Cedar, since that is a highly recognizable street name. Obviously some are taken elsewhere in the city, like Oak St. But, Pine, Fir, Honeylocust, etc. Many trees not taken. Sort of kitschy, but could tie together the series of major north-sout...

Lots of open space that seemed wasted, and it seemed like, at least for the products I was searching for, their produce was a lacking.
I feel like you just described every Trader Joe's I have ever visited.

Some positive outcomes from this current renovation: the infrastructure upgrade underneath the street will make the next rehab less complex and somewhat faster to complete. Re: Washington and Portland Mixed Use - 22 stories

That's all the info I've got, but I'd imagine that the tower will be on the Washington/Portland corner. This seems correct to me, especially if the alley ROW must be maintained. That would mean tower (with underground parking and base retail) at Washington and Portland, new fire station at 5th and ...

Re: Tunnels!

Just so we're on the same page, transit (at least around here) used to be privately owned and operated, thought they made liberal use of the public ROW. I'm not an expert, but operations were funded by fares, while expansion was funded primarily by speculative real estate investment. At some point, ...

Re: OX-OP Gallery and Residences.

If the neighboring properties are ever developed, then large parts of this building will lose value. I guess that might qualify as future affordable housing? The other major problem I see is the lack of active frontage on Washington. They should make the giant front lobby into commercial space and u...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

Streetcars *can* run as fast as a bus, but they can't drive around something that's blocking their way. I firmly believe that any streetcar vehicles should have reinforced front ends, the modern equivalent of a cow catcher, and a clear legal right to ram or push any vehicle blocking it's path, pref...

Why in the world would you put in a false ceiling like this in this space?
My initial thought is noise control. It looks like it is designed so you can still see through to the mural.

It's a snapshot. Different people will view it differently. To me it looks like the calm before the storm. The birthrate continues to fall and the mortality of the largest generation in the history of America will start ramping rapidly in the next decade. The first of the boomers are now 73. The mo...

Re: D Line - Chicago-Fremont/Emerson Rapid Bus

That may be the plan now, bu that doesn't mean it won't change. I wasn't worried about the parking. I was worried about confined space because of conflicts between bus stop, movement zone, and patio seating. Corner placement is best for transit reasons, but the sidewalk corner can get crowded. Also,...

Re: D Line - Chicago-Fremont/Emerson Rapid Bus

The current south bound bus stop is in front of the health partners building further up the block, so people loitering at the actual bus stop wouldn't even be close to Turtle Bread. Given the generally confined space, I'm guessing the new stop would be in the same location. Moving it closer to the a...

Okay, so in order to experience the trees that are saved, people have to go outside the city? The majority of preservation from increased density is from prevention of distant greenfield development. You can also visit the improved local parks that are supported by increased density if you can't ma...

Why does our code ban fast food restaurants? I understand (and approve of) banning drive-throughs, but pedestrians need to eat quickly too.
