Re: Suburban city councils and government gone wild

Not a "gone wild" post, but since there's really no where else to put this: http://election.startribune.com/results/2015/primary/ It seems that St. Paul and a handful of suburbs held primaries today for municipal elections, as well as various school board seats. This being the one year ou...

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?

How expensive could it be to upgrade Lutsen, though? If the NLX wasn't yet completed (it will be), this would easily complete it. As for transportation from Duluth to Lutsen, an upgraded North Shore Scenic Railway could probably handle that. Afterwards it could be turned into commuter rail and/or in...

So will it be real once they slap DMC and Mayo(tm) across everything? I barely see any circumstantial substance either way here.

Re: Zip Rail and NAHSRG Rail to Rochester

If the NAHSRG turns out to be legit, because it's a private sector group with investors to answer to, would it take less time for them to go through the planning and engineering processes than it would normally take Mn/DOT or Amtrak? I know MN/DOT has been criticised for having only 4 people dedicat...

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?

We may not only be talking about money here, though it is a comparison of the two best (only) choices (host or don't host), and some of the intangibles can be converted into monetary values. There isn't a set amount of money to be spent by government during this time frame. The hundreds of millions ...

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?

To decide on whether or not it would be worth hosting the Olympics, we have to look at the opportunity costs, not just whether it generates a profit, which it wouldn't. If this were to generate the political capital required to finish building out our transit system, and if the net cost/benefit of h...

Re: Zip Rail and NAHSRG Rail to Rochester

a PR firm When reading through the consortium thread, It came to mind that there are actually companies (and other organizations) that shill on social media as a function. Governments do it too (proven via leaks), even though that's a matter rarely discussed outside of tin-foil clubs. What was seen...

Rolling out trash cans like these could be a good solution. Lower cost + more trash cans = win! http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/solar-powered-trash-cans-saved-philadelphia-almost-a-million-bucks Edit: We may not want to use those specific models, though. http://www.treehugger.com/solar-technology/p...

Re: Zip Rail and NAHSRG Rail to Rochester

Most likely outcome is that this private endeavor breaks down in a year or two and we're left back where we started. There's no way that the group is going to be able to raise multiple billions of dollars for this suspect plan. This almost feels consortium-level to me, but apparently there are actu...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Must the contingency funds explicitly be federal funds, and/or be given to the feds if not used, regardless of origin? If neither, or not one of the two, then I could imagine contingency funds being used to add some stations back in.

Two potential reasons that come to mind would be for some sort of "Geographic Equity" purpose, and that each line may only be considered on its own, and not as part of a system, under current rules.
