Re: Forum Etiquette

Thoughts: The term "height fetishist" geeks me out. "Zero moderation is the best moderation" sounds a lot like Ron Paul saying that heroin should be legal because no one you know will do heroin. It's naive and it severely underestimates the size of the overlapping area in the Pe...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

I took a course and interned in DC and I lived across the street from Van Dorn... with my car parked ~1 mile away to save $50/mo. I got around without a car just fine, as did my classmates who lived much further from the station than me. Kangnam it ain't, but I find the notion that the area is hosti...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

I agree that not many people have heard of MN unless they have a personal relationship to the state, but in my experience we hit way above our weight in this respect. I grew up watching St. Thomas football, so I was quite surprised when I met my Nigerian roommate in Athens, he was wearing a Tommies ...

Re: Saint Paul Union Depot

I worked for Amtrak's loyalty program very briefly many years ago. Im over 90% certain that Amtrak owns the north east corridor tracks, as well as Hiawatha and some on the CA coast (less sure about that).

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

There seems to be a lot of recency bias undergirding the feeling that the tea party movement will continue as a phenomenon long-term. We don't know that. Frankly, the kind of Jacksonian populism that flourished in the wake of the economic downturn should have been expected. Similarly, it is just as ...

Re: Vikings Stadium

My concern is that there seems to be any number of mechanisms to have an entirely transparent roof, but increase its opaqueness when necessary (it wouldn't be during the Vikes' regular season). 3M is a world leader in optical film, we have all these window companies... if there's any place that coul...

Re: Vikings Stadium

For me, the biggest issue is the non-transparent part of the roof. I think if the roof had been entirely clear, it'd be much improved.

Isn't there a cost-effective way to increase and decrease the opacity of a roof like that on the stadium?

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

The wildly leftist magazine The Economist recently ran a special on the success of Nordic countries: http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21571136-politicians-both-right-and-left-could-learn-nordic-countries-next-supermodel In this piece the authors mentioned one US state as analagous to the featur...

Re: Subsidized Housing

The "market" simply can not provide adequate housing for low income individuals. Ringing up Target purchases all day or cleaning hotels does't pay well enough to provide adequate, humane housing for an individual much less any dependents. Yeah, but that's the thing though. We see that the...
