Minneapolis Street Design
I just read this article about street lighting in MInneapolis, and I think that street design is an important topic, especially with all the streets that are getting reconstructed. Minneapolis does have a terrible mishmash of street lights throughout the city, and it would be nice to start developin...

Re: Target Center Renovation
It is definitely better than before, but I do hope they study a few other options for the exterior cladding. The simplicity of the existing form is actually quite nice, and cladding it in a more refined material could do a lot to improve the building. The cladding is obviously one of the most import...

Re: Hiawatha Avenue Grain Elevators & Freight Rail Corridor
A few other examples of grain elevator conversions into housing... In Oslo, HRTB Arkitekter AS transformed an old grain elevator into 19-story student housing complex known as Grünerløkka Studenthus. http://inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2013/03/Gr%C3%BCnerl%C3%B8kka-Studenthus-1.jpeg In...

Re: Minneapolis Curling Club
Well, my thought was that it would be a public amenity and that the parks could help run leagues. However, maybe it is just better if it is run by the private sector. I am not an expert on the different types of partnerships the city sets up (Sea Salt, Minneapolis Rowing Club, Golf Course, ect) I ce...

Re: Roof Depot site
That's actually Smith Foundry, which is still in operation, to many neighbors' dismay. The Roof Depot site is just across 28th St from here. Yes, it is in the background of the previous image. Here is the part of the building that fronts the bike trail. As you can see, it really does have amazing p...

Re: Hiawatha Avenue Grain Elevators & Freight Rail Corridor
I have been walking and riding the train post all these grain elevators quite frequently and I keep hoping that they will be preserved in a creative way. I ran across a few examples that I found to be quite exciting. The first is a really great mural on a grain elevator in Western Australia. Imagine...

Re: Roof Depot site
More news about the roof depot site. It looks like they rejected an option to allow any private use of the site. What about a site for a new Minneapolis Curling Club.... It would be great to see the city do something special with this site. For those unfamiliar with the site, I posted a view from th...

Re: Minneapolis Curling Club
A site at the Minneapolis Farmers Market, or somewhere near the former Minnesota United Stadium site could work well. This would have very good access from both the future blue and green line extensions, and could have strong connections with all the new breweries going into the North Loop.

Right! It is a valid idea to start throwing around and see if it sticks. There would certainly be an interest from different corporations in downtown Minneapolis.

Re: Roof Depot site
Yes, good points. The site probably shows up best in the Hiawatha/Lake Station Area Master Plan. In this study, the preferred concept plan has the site labeled as #7 North Phillips Industrial, with a light orange underlay. Below are the changes that the study proposes for the site. In addition to th...

Minneapolis Curling Club
Does anyone else find it strange that Minneapolis does not have a curling club? St. Paul, Frogtown, Burnsville, and Blaine all have clubs and it is certainly a growing sport. Combined with some sort of ice rink, I think there could be a lot of demand for this amenity. This could be a great public/pr...

Re: Roof Depot site
Something to keep an eye on. It appears that Minneapolis was finally able to purchase to Roof Depot site, however they will not need this entire site for their operations. This would be a really great opportunity for some development that fronts the greenway and helps build out the north side of the...

Re: Southside - General Topics
I am sure many have already seen this, but the city just released an updated plan for the South Minneapolis Parks. Additionally, they have created a parks connection map, which could be useful for future bike and greenway planning. There will be a meeting held next week on Monday, February 22, from ...

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium Construction Updates
It looks like the Vikings are searching for more tailgating space around the stadium. A bunch of tailgating parking lots that sit empty all year long does not seem like good idea. Could certain streets be temporarily closed for additional parking or could other lots be distributed along the green/bl...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)
From what I've heard from a few sources, Goodman and Johnson were against the lane reduction, which weakened the City's position. Johnson should be the one FOR lane reductions, especially given all the difficulties with the Hiawatha portion of Highway 55. The blue line proved that you need to be ev...

Re: Minneapolis Park System
In regards to the Hiawatha Golf Course Improvements, I thought this project from Copenhagen was very relevant. During heavy rains, portions of parks turn into ponds that capture and retain water on site until the drainage system has capacity to handle it. http://citiscope.org/story/2016/why-copenhag...

I'm also disappointed the commercial lot at Longfellow Station still sits empty. Something like Longfellow ...
