Re: Minneapolis 2021 Elections - Mayor, City Council, BET, Park Board

I'm glad we're finally getting to the important issues in this race, like "how much responsibility does Kate Knuth bear for the crimes of the Pinochet regime?"

Re: Minneapolis 2021 Elections - Mayor, City Council, BET, Park Board

Feels a lot like Wheeler vs Iannarone (Portland mayor 2020). There are similarities, but I think the main difference is pretty significant: RCV in Minneapolis forecloses the kind of prominent spoiler candidacy that secured Wheeler's re-election. Also thanks to RCV, the presence of two progressive c...

Re: Minneapolis 2021 Elections - Mayor, City Council, BET, Park Board

Fascinating results in the DFL Mayoral endorsement. When boiled down to the three leading candidates, the votes split this way: Jacob Frey - 1,071 Sheila Nezhad - 937 Kate Knuth - 859 Knuth was eliminated, and almost all her votes went to Nezhad. In the final round, Nezhad led with 1,528 (53.1%) to ...

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West

Factories have been moving from the central city out to suburban and exurban locations since the beginning of mass auto-mobility. It's not due to the choice of core city politicians and planners, it's due to simple economics. Factories once clustered around railroads and maintained their own sidings...

Here's a long drone video of SWLRT construction, which takes you from the Minneapolis border almost all the way to downtown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqew3ihqtLU

I think it makes one thing clear, which is that there is a lot more work to do.

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

Yeah, I'm with Grant. The Uptown area wants to feel like a big thriving single retail district, but the truth is that it is cut into about six pieces by some really awful roads and that makes it a miserable experience for casual window shopping. Those three big roads need a massive rethink. Bringing...

Re: Minneapolis 2021 Elections - Mayor, City Council, BET, Park Board

It's very funny to me that both sides seem to believe the other was more organized, and thus, that their results were more artificial. I think progressives have a stronger identity and clearer objectives, but to the extent that a single group was actually "organizing" behind a slate of candidates, i...

They are maxing out the parking. Literally hitting the city's maximums. I don't think I've seen that before? I know they have a substantial retail component, are replacing an existing lot, and that this is a fancy pants area. Even still! There's going to be an E Line station right there. With under ...

Re: The Dayton's Project

As I sit in my office, there is maybe one (I've heard noises but not actually seen them) other person on the floor today. Didn't see anyone when I was in on Wednesday. Didn't come in yesterday. Which is to say I've been rethinking my faith that people are mostly going to start coming back to the of...

I'm not saying that this couldn't ultimately kill the project or that this isn't how Robbinsdale feels right now, but I think people should treat future threats like this with some skepticism. Think of it like the opening salvos of a negotiation. Robbinsdale will lay out their issues with the alignm...

I don't mean to downplay crime as a serious issue, but just because someone says something like that doesn't mean you have to believe them. You are free to use your common sense in evaluating these claims. The pandemic and uncertainty about space needs in the future is the clear overriding reason wh...

Funny set of results that defy any clear cut narrative. Progressives and moderates have various reasons to celebrate or worry. On the northside, Cunningham appears to be much stronger than previously supposed. Vetaw may have caused fatal damage to her campaign with her comments in that forum with lo...

Either way, this is a replacement for the older apartment buildings that were unfortunately damaged by the Theater Garage building construction. I thought we decided that the cracks in the building pre-dated the Theater Garage construction? You may be right, I just remember it being an associated i...

The developer of this is very active and personable on Twitter and Instagram, so if you are interested in the status of this project, I recommend following him. He will post pictures regularly and probably answer questions if you ask.

It's interesting that this one took a while to surface? It was submitted to the city on September 30th, 2020 and I noticed the submission entry way back then . I guess they were revising the design further. Either way, this is a replacement for the older apartment buildings that were unfortunately d...

I mean, you can't complain about a lack of communication from a local leader and then go out of your way to avoid communication from that local leader! If you don't want to read what CM Bender has to say, that's fine, but then don't say you haven't heard from her.

I think it's very good for a number of different reasons if Minneapolis' lower density outer neighborhoods get a couple mid-rises at their major corners for starters.

I think you should sign up for the Ward 10 newsletter: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/governmen ... wsletters/

Almost every CM does a newsletter, usually monthly or bi-weekly, and I can't recommend them enough, it's a very good way to keep tabs on what's going on in the city.

Re: West Lake Street Hotel- 3012 Excelsior Blvd (8 stories, 100')

Unsurprisingly, this project doesn't appear to be going forward as a hotel. Happily, it appears to be rebooted as a residential building. An application was submitted to the city this week for a nine story mixed-use building with 74 units. That's actually non-compliant with the built form map, which...
