Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Cool. Now they can finish building all those enormous bridges getting built over suburban stroads and wetlands. Every time we visit my SIL in Eden Prairie, I'm astonished at the infrastructure going in along 212. Better than another new highway or grade-separated intersection that's supposedly need...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

The article mentions no "direct transit services" to Inver Hills Community College and Dakota County Technical College, but Metro Transit serves the former and MVTA served the latter pre-COVID.

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

If HSR (around 220 mph) is ever built in Minnesota it should be Twin Cities-Rochester-La Crosse-Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago. Improving existing rail corridors like the one the Empire Builder operates on to allow higher speeds (110 mph max), less delays by freight traffic, and allow additional trains s...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

The problem for Amtrak with routes like the Empire Builder is that they are extremely unprofitable. I think it makes sense for Amtrak to run them fewer times per week, but the Minneapolis-Chicago route should be (at least four times) daily in both directions, and I hope they are able to break that ...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

If only there was someone running for president who regularly rode Amtrak and understands its value to the American people. I see what you're getting at, but it's going to take more than electing Biden to make Amtrak actually good (I would say great again, but let's face it, it's never been "great"...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

In case anyone didn't know, Amtrak is planning to cut service on many long-distance routes, including the Empire Builder, from daily to tri-weekly. The service cuts for the Empire Builder are planned to begin October 19th. Westbound service will depart Chicago on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. East...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

But isn't the proposed routing on Central, then 53rd to University, and a northern terminus at Northtown Mall?

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

Is it really a deal breaker for a Nicollet-Central aBRT to be a couple miles longer than the D Line? My main concern with this route is the Central Avenue segment where it crosses the Canadian Pacific tracks at-grade. Just one train could really screw up the schedule, and there's no plans for grade-...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Construction has started on the Lake Marion Trail in Burnsville. This will eventually link Savage and Farmington via Burnsville and Lakeville.

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

I'm always fine with a tunnel, of course, but it's expensive and takes longer and might lead to stops being placed less conveniently to cut costs. This project is already expensive. Granted it would be more expensive with a tunnel, but lets not pretend the Blue Line Extension running almost entirel...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

I'm pretty sure the 54 bus/W 7th aBRT corridor is going to stay, and it's not because Riverview is canceled. Towards the end of the Riverview alternatives analysis process, they had basically settled on needing 2 transit services in the corridor. One direct connection between downtown and the airpo...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

In previous BRT analysis and still in the running: Nicollet - Downtown Minneapolis to American Blvd (#18) Central-University - Downtown Minneapolis to Northtown (#10) W Broadway-Cedar - Robbinsdale to 38th St Blue Line (#14/#22) - extended south along Cedar compared to old plan W 7th-White Bear - M...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

If they're that desperate for the BNSF alignment then tell Hennepin County to give up the land in Crystal that BNSF needs to build their connection with Canadian Pacific. Otherwise it's either a no-go or jumping through a lot of hoops for several years to try to make BNSF cooperate. Or pray that Joe...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

As for tunneling, are we suggesting there's as much political will to tunnel under single family detached houses as under an airport? I know we tunneled to avoid townhouses but that doesn't mean we're obligated to blow money like that again. I'm suggesting there should be the political will to tunn...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

The report assumes maintaining the corridor at 2 tracks (except potentially around Northtown Yard). BNSF lets Northstar have one track to itself in the morning/evening and runs freights on the other, creating congestion when freight trains are coming from both directions. BNSF hates the idea of mid...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Too often these studies end up negotiating against themselves. Even if the study authors think it's impractical, why not study eight trips per day in each direction? Why not study sixteen trips per day in each direction? Why limit the scope of even the exploratory study? My guess is this: "The obje...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

If we're willing to TBM under the airport then we can TBM under North Minneapolis so there's as very little disruption on the surface as possible.
