Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Does poor soil conditions mean poor for construction, or did they find nasty surprises in the soil from when that land was a rail yard?

So much for Kenilworth being the cheap and easy alignment.

Re: Gold Line BRT (Gateway Corridor)

The St. Paul Green Line facility is a major roadblock (or in this case a rail block) to extending the Green Line east, though maybe it could simply realign from 4th to Prince Street next to the Green Line facility. Then after turning onto Kellogg the Green Line could go where ever into the East Side...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Probably easiest, cheapest, and best to make the St. Cloud Amtrak depot a transit hub with local buses connecting to all inbound and outbound Northstar trips.

Re: Tunnels!

I think the downtown at-grade alignment is fine. Considering there's no long-term plan to add a third line to the 5th St corridor there isn't much need. I'd even be surprised if 7.5 min peak frequencies come back before the next decade. As for the cheap tunneling, I believe it was first considered ...

Re: Tunnels!

While Miami doesn't have skyways (that I know of) their Metro Rail is elevated above their People Mover system in downtown, so that's probably the closest example of what elevated rail in Downtown Minneapolis would look like. I don't think anyone is proposing building the tracks through the skyways ...

Re: Fantasy maps

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1vgCWq8hoU3K65GtDF5VR7FJjScgHDNn-&usp=sharing This is basically an alternate universe where the Twin Cities follows Denver and Dallas's example of having large rapid transit networks but the routes miss a lot of important and high density areas in favor of easy...

Re: Tunnels!

Now I wonder how an automated rapid transit network in Montreal consisting of 42 miles will cost CA$6.5 billion (according to Wikipedia) while Honolulu's automated rapid transit line, which I believe will be built completely above grade, will cost at least $10 billion for a 20 mile route. I'm sure g...

Re: Tunnels!

Since Downtown Minneapolis is one of the main focus areas of grade-separating LRT, the issue with building it above grade are the skyways. However, perhaps there could be opportunities for integrating stations with adjacent buildings.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

How much, if any, construction can get done now that it looks like we finally have snow for the rest of the season?

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

The Northstar St. Cloud Extension Study, which you can see if you scroll a little bit up on this thread, seems to assume the Amtrak station would be used. However I only quickly scanned the study, but I only saw mentions of the Amtrak station, not the East St. Cloud Park & Ride.

Re: Interstate 94

I do wish it was built because it's a major middle finger for people who had their houses tore down and were forced to move only for no project to take place. The right of way was aquired the impacts were felt. No benefit was there. Plus if 335 was built it would an easier argument for 94 to be clo...

Re: Interstate 94

It would be like I-335, which was planned to connect 35 and 94 through Northeast. I doubt many people even know about that project, or ever think "I wish there was a freeway through Northeast so I could drive to Rosedale from Golden Valley a few minutes faster. I certainly don't actually wish 335 h...

Re: Interstate 94

I think thats kind of obvious of course its mostly local traffic but it would be a major construction project that would require a large amount of money from the state and those state senators and reps would be very loud as even if they dont use it every day they still use it during the year. Peopl...

Re: Interstate 94

Trying to sell removing I94 is a none starter for most people in the state who just care about getting into and out of the city for work, sports, ect in my opinion. Capping it is something alot more people would be open to and if it was successful would move the conversation forward on either tunne...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

If we are talking a shallow tunnel downtown for the LRT. I would like to hear more as to how much more useful it could be to other assets. North Star, Northern Lights Express, Amtrak HSR to Chicago, and HSR Rochester / St. Paul. Would these lines be able to utilize this proposed tunnel segment and ...

Re: Interstate 94

It's one or ther other in reality. We cap it and forget about it, while incudced demand still does its magic, or we remove it, and actually increase our tax revenue. I agree with the short term option of bus lanes, but if designed poorly, we could easily see low ridership lead to an argument for lo...

Re: Interstate 94

What would be the plan for the semis and heavy trucks? University? When we talk about a boulevard to replace I-94, that would still be a major street which could support trucks and the like. This isn't a greenway or a woonerf or something like that. It would just be better adapted to the urban cont...

Re: Interstate 94

Given there were between 140k and 160k AADT on 94 at any given segment between 35E and 35W in 2019 (per MnDot's traffic visualizer app) a full removal would absolutely not be popular so unfortunately it's probably not wise to remove it if we want political support for transit. It wouldn’t be a full...

Re: Interstate 94

Almost any European city will show that permanently closing a short segment of I-94 wouldn't bring doom and gloom. Of course, their transit is much better than ours, but their cities have little if any urban freeways, and they're not to the scale of our huge interstates. Whether or not we close a sh...

Re: Interstate 94

Was people's transportation crippled when the 35W Bridge collapsed? From what I've read, people found other means to get to their destination and it wasn't the apocalypse like a lot of people thought it would be. I think the same would happen with converting I-94 into a boulevard between 280 and I-3...
