Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Amtraks full connectUS plan is out https://www.amtrakconnectsus.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Amtrak-2021-Corridor-Vision-May27_2021.pdf They mention wanting to extend 3 Hiawatha trains to reach MSP split between the current route and through Eau Claire. They also mentioned the NLX so it seems they...

Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists

I know when I bought my car I gave myself a limit to how many miles I can drive it a month (usually a little more than to work and back). Although I have been tempted to drive on some 2 lane highways and explore towns/areas that are too far to bike and don't have transit.

Re: Intercity Bus Services

I feel like any transit improvement the includes greater MN is a good thing. I mean we complain how limited it is in MSP but its miles ahead of anywhere else besides maybe Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, and St. Cloud.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

I'm trying to figure out what kind of extra costs would of been tacked on later if the SWLRT was routed through uptown like people wanted. Probably would end up with a few more stations like the green line and maybe a few people pushing to "save the greenway" and demand that speeds to be restricted ...

Is it bad that the first thing I thought for a replacement was turning roller garden into an (indoor) beer garden.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Depends on where they're moving to. If the 2nd white flight will be another round of unchecked suburbanization or a few planners have somewhat learned from that mistake. And what the current suburbs will do when the wealth leaves.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I know this little speed limit discussion ended but something that got pointed out to me recently was that increase and decreasing the speed limit can both lower the amount of cars a single lane of highway can move in an hour in some cases. The idea is traffic flow rate is based on the (density of c...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

As a 15 year plan I actually see it as somewhat practical and potentially doable even if they don't have political favor backing them for all said 15 years. With regards to MN I wonder if this will mean Target Field station might officially become an amtrak station since I know we've discussed at le...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Anyone know when the 3/5 bonding bill rule was introduced? Cause part of me suspects that it (and the unlimited nature for airports and highways) might be close to 50-60 years old now.

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

From what I can gather from a 1985 report before 1979 Railroads had to pay a 5% gross earnings tax to the state but after that was changed to a property tax which was calculated for each railroad by miles of track of the railroad; values of land for the railroad; and buildings owned by railroad with...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Speaking of double track I recall someone saying the reason why a decent amount of companies ended up ripping up everything aside from the bare minimum and are hesitant to help upgrade their lines because certain states taxed them either for the amount of track they had and what condition it was in ...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Think it also depends on how much of the track needs to be upgraded to class 4 or higher. Never been on the Empire Builder and can't find any resources online, but I'm guessing only a portion of the line hits the 79mph max from St. Paul to Chicago and it has to slow down in city limits and bridge cr...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

ah that makes sense, for a second I either thought some employee got a funny idea to make a new driver buzz around MVTA's territory or if Metro was trying to be sneaky in seeing how it be like driving new routes south of the river (and tbh if metro were to ever take over the shorter buses probably f...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

Anyone know how common it is for Metro to train its drivers outside of its zone? Only wondering because I saw a metro bus (one of the shorter one door models used for some suburban routes like the 539) labeled "driver training" down in Burnsville/Savage on Egan Dr. Could be nothing if its common for...

I think I like the new design a bit more then the Cinema Flats proposal. Don't know why they decided to increase the commercial sq ft at the lose of I think of one less unit though. It also seem the knocked a few parking spots off from the older proposal, but I think they might of been able to get a...

Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists

I've driven an almost uncomfortable distance just to get some food from kwik trip once or twice. Thankfully there's one less than a mile from my work so I usually swing by for lunch (sometimes even by bike) or on my way home. But sometimes when I'm not working or am at home, I have to get creative i...

Re: Ideas on Funding

This is an idea more suited if/when Metro gets heavy or commuter rail set up but I do wish they could buy/develop land around some stations (and no not just to use it for a dang park and ride). Iirc the Hong Kong metro system which right before the pandemic had a farebox recovery ratio of 180-190%, ...

Just saw the video myself and was about to post it.
Interesting how the trails in the Finnish city seemed to be packed down a little kind of like cross country ski trails and the fact that they project trail markings onto the snow is actually kinda cool.
