Re: Minneapolis Public Schools

Agreed - I feel my #1 duty when voting for my local school board is to vote in competent people, and keep out the crazies. Ideology is not front and center in that voting choice, because once stuff goes off the rails, it's near-impossible to rein it back in.

Re: New Basketball Arena Discussion

Just give the state a 5-10% equity stake in the team, simple as.

ETA: Of course the other owners would never allow this for the precedent it sets, but if you want the state to fund your CapEx, it's not unreasonable to seek an equity stake, IMHO.

Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT

angrysuburbanite's point is interesting - I think the western suburbs are sort of the "center of gravity" when it comes to the Twin Cities suburbs, and maybe especially the SW suburbs. If gas prices are still hovering near $5 next spring/summer, and the SW suburb "normies" are able to utilize SWLRT ...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

My kids and I go to the EP mall for 3 reasons: movie theater, Barnes and Noble, and High Score (card store / retro video games). All on the food court side of the mall. I haven't been to the other side in a long time (not counting Target)

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

For those that don't know, Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) has called the Twin Cities home since 2015. It's a charity speedrunning event that has grown into one of the largest in the world. The speedrunning community has really come to call Minneapolis a sort of 2nd home, and there were some very ...

Re: Star Tribune Printing Plant Redevelopment

Not that I'm in favor of this *at all*, but at least it's a re-use of an existing industrial property and not a de novo build. Makes it easier (or at least as easy as now) to redevelop in the future.

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

Maybe we just start holding back some of our $100bn+ federal tax receipts to reimburse us for the "unpaid invoices" from the federal government.

(I know, I know - that's not how federal taxes work in practice.)

From the construction update email last Friday:

Testing along the METRO Green Line Extension continues this summer and throughout 2026. Starting next week, light rail trains will begin to be used in testing activities in Minneapolis, between Bryn Mawr and Target Field Stations. The purpose of this ...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

That giant JC Penney's parking lot is primed for some sort of redevelopment. It's blocked off an used for nothing except snow storage and a seasonal flower shop. Importantly, that's the side of the mall nearest the LRT station (although it's still a healthy walk through forbidding streetscape).

On ...

Re: New Basketball Arena Discussion

Yeah, depending on where in Hammond this would go, it could be a matter of feet from the Illinois state line / Chicago city limits. It's pretty dumb for Indiana. But still sucks as a "Chicago" Bears fan.

Re: 2025-2026 Minnesota Legislature

If folks would like to have that conversation, and fully replace state money with local money, let's get it out of the way when we (hopefully) get a trifecta back in the fall and give the metro the authority to handle it ourselves going forward, and take it off the table for future meddling ...

Also, increasing the state income tax in lieu of sales tax is not great - it disincentivizes saving and investing. Right now, I'm taxed more on my consumption, so I have a lower effective tax rate on savings and investment.

I would push back on this - by this logic, you ought to support raising ...

Re: 2025-2026 Minnesota Legislature

I think it makes a lot of sense for clothing and groceries to be exempted from sales tax, but I've never understood why "services" are exempted also. That should be an easy broadening of the tax base (except for all the special interests, like hair stylists, tax prep, etc. that would complain ...

Don't know if this is the best place/thread to ask but does anyone know any good books or reports on road and highway projects, construction etc. of the state from before WWII/the interstate system.

I've never been to, and know nothing about, the Normandy hotel, but just by the look of it, I imagine there would be some rabid "Save the Normandy" types to pop out of the woodwork as well.

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

The network effect is definitely real. It may be ~5 minutes longer to ride from some terminus to downtown, but what about the time saved for someone travelling from, say, Cedar-Riverside to Robbinsdale? Or Robbinsdale to Brooklyn Park? Many (most?) trips are not terminus-to-terminus rides, but ...
