Re: Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) Clinic Expansion

Yes, I imagine it would be the Swedish Hospital and the Excelen Center (across from the Hope Church). These buildings definitely scream "past their useful life," as medical buildings at least. Part of me hopes they could be reused-- they're actually pretty appealing buildings and could pos...

It's also great to hear that many of these units will be for families. This building could accommodate many Somali families who would otherwise need to commute and park to visit Karmel Plaza!

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

I will go through this point by point: -H&M is certainly popular. However, consumption patterns change, and our city's retail scene will inevitably follow. Fast fashion is increasingly online-- Shein, a Chinese company that has no physical presence in the US, now takes home 40% of the US fast fa...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

I think it could just be that we are not in the same exact demographic group! I am just speaking from my experience as a person in their early twenties (who used to live in the Uptown area and frequented LynLake more than HennLake for the reasons described above). It is also worth noting that the H&...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

^ I can provide another perspective for this as a young person. When people come to Uptown, they want an urban experience and local flavor rather than a big-box store you can find in most suburban malls (which also offers more convenient parking and more stores). On top of that, H&M is a dinosau...

Re: Nicollet Ave / Eat Street - Whittier, Stevens, Loring Park

I did not hear about the lawsuit. It is a shame that the denser 6-story building was defeated at this location. That being said, these are two thoughtful developments that fit well into the urban fabric. I'm also pleasantly surprised by their designs-- these have much more of a "point of view&q...

It's great to see development in this part of Eat Street-- it does start to get a little depressing around 28th, especially with the abandoned car wash, the back of K-Mart, and more recently destruction from the riots. It's possible that they are preempting the development that will occur once Nicol...

Is anything even going on with this project? I hate to see these vacant buildings going into the death spiral of disrepair (fires, damage incurred by weather, etc.), which then makes them even more expensive to repurposing, therefore making preservation that much more unlikely. $600k/"affordabl...

Totally agree with you, eazydp. I'd also argue that a diversity of building types (old, new, short, tall, and what have you) creates a more vibrant urban landscape-- it exhibits history, fosters a range of businesses and preserves affordability, and it lends itself to an overall pedestrian friendly/...

Tomorrow's Planning Commission includes a 53 unit development on 13th Street in Sheridan (will wrap around the commercial building home to The Peacock Lounge). On tomorrow's Planning Commission agenda: Adaptive reuse of former St. James Episcopal Church at 3225 E Minnehaha Pkwy. 28 new of "missing middle" units in the 1940 church and the 1960s educational wing. Not a hugely remarkable building, but there's definitely a need for these units. Also ...

It's great to see Webber-Camden (Camden Town?) blooming while preserving its historic building stock as well! North Minneapolis definitely needs the kins of community institutions that this development would bring-- it seems like the Capri Theater has been pretty successful in this regard.

It's good to see some investment in this part of town. As a relative newcomer to the city, I've heard stories of Seward in the 1960s and 70s being a bustling area and a hub for counterculture, but it's had to imagine it-- whenever I'm around those parts, it feels pretty sparse. Hopefully this will g...

I'm glad to see that those big-box retail spaces are being demolished-- I think time has proven that this is not the future of Uptown or of retail period. I think the addition of residential units to this intersection is a step towards solidifying Uptown's future as a population center outside of do...

Re: 800 Washington Av S (Guthrie ramp liner) - AECOM / City of Lakes Community Land Trust

it certainly seems like we have plenty of empty commercial space around here. Really? The ironclad/moxy corner. Anything else? I was speaking more citywide, where there's plenty of empty spaces. Though, as you note, the area nearby is actually pretty well filled in. The original proposal had someth...
