Re: City Walk Uptown - (1312 West Lake Street)
Does anyone know how this new building will interact with Cheapo? Will it be built wall-to-wall or will the alleyway be reestablished? Currently the space that would be the alley is just parking. According to the plan the alley will divide the two buildings: http://www.ouruptown.com/2011/12/cowboy-...

Re: New Target Building - (1001 Nicollet Mall)
I agree about the WCCO building. It REALLY would be a shame to lose it. Malcolm Holzman from the eminent firm of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer designed it and it is well documented in architectural journals. I think it's a beautiful example of stellar stonework. HHP also designed Orchestra Hall across the ...

Re: Loring Vue Apartments - (415 Oak Grove Street)
The brick and stone on the Oak Grove side should weather differently and so I hope they have a bit more contrast in the future. Right now their tones are too similar and the effect seems washed out. But that's just my preference.

Re: 330 South 12th
Anybody want to throw in a rendering of a 40 to 50 level tower on this parcel? Curious to see how it would change the skyline. From my vantage point to the south it looks like it would block Norwest and/or Foshay :o Here's a quick image using a photo by a photographer who goes by the handle of Carb...

Re: Uptown Theatre
Ah, fond memories of the Uptown. I was friends with much of the staff there in the '80's back when it showed films in repertory. Every weekend the staff and invited friends would watch an after-hours movie picked by the projectionist and it wouldn't start until 1 am or so. Maybe 20 people just hangi...

Re: Nicollet Residences - (455 Nicollet Mall)
I would tend to think they're eliminating the smallest units. If the condo market really is turning around then Opus might be re-thinking the strategy. Build an apartment tower now with fewer small units that might be more easily turned into condos later?

Canada's not really a foreign country - at least to us Minnesotans - is it?

Re: Third North
I dunno, the (presumably) metal panels look textured or at least with some tone variations. Zinc and copper maybe? It just looks like a bad rendering, but not necessarily a bad building. They should have hired me for the imaging

Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics
I thought I'd put this out there as a thread dedicated to the specific issues of the problems and potential solutions to creating a 'Minneapolis of the Future.' How can we make-remake Minneapolis as a city that truly matters on the world stage? This is different from the "Fantasies' thread in t...

... I STILL maintain that we'll continue to see developers push to get projects underway this quarter after hearing that last quarter's supply boost did NOTHING to the vacancy rate. I've been out of the loop lately so I'm curious to know if this is true. Good news if so. Is there an article or disc...

Re: Vikings Stadium
I hope people just take a breather from this. And I don't think it's prudent to ban anyone either. I really disagree with nasa sometimes but I'm glad someone offers counterpoints to mine. It would be very boring around here if all we hear is "Cool building!" "Yeah, I like it!" or...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Actually, Minneapolis is built upon the model of 16 blocks per mile , or blocks of 330' x 330'. That means the street-to-street centerlines. Since the standard street is 30' wide, each block is typically 300' x 300'. In South Minneapolis, the North/South blocks are twice the standard length of the E...

I remember the Creamette Lofts (across the street from River Station) completely collapsed during construction after a big storm. I worked in the Colonial Warehouse at the time and it was an awesome pile of kindling! I think it was almost completely framed up at the time.

I had posted these two shots on Minnescraper once upon a time. The first is from 1972. The second is one I took in 2008 from about the same spot. http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/3163/mpls1972before.jpg http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6439/mpls2008after.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Re: Xcel Energy HQ
Can i just be a bit of a curmudgeon and say (like I did at SkyscraperCity) that this building looks like it was carved from Target's HQ? Totally non-offensive interplay of curtainwall with precast-punched-openings with the usual Scotch-Brand plaid detail. So totally inoffensive that it is rapidly be...

Re: Minneapolis Skyway System
I'm going to throw out a far more broad issue and thus generate potentially more inflammatory comments. And I think it's good. The skyways - along with massive shopping malls - operate as a "quasi-public" space. I submit that if certain forces have their way and believe that privatization ...

Re: Minneapolis & St. Paul Fantasies and Speculations
Thanks. I should have mentioned that it would be nice to have it positioned exactly on the 45th parallel, but that would put it maybe a bit too far north of downtown.

Re: Minneapolis & St. Paul Fantasies and Speculations
I wanted to see what an "icon" tower might look like in the skyline, so a while back I created what I called the "Star of the North" tower. The "spear" would be oriented to the North Star. At night, a powerful laser emanating from the spear would connect the city to the...

Re: Minneapolis & St. Paul Fantasies and Speculations
I would like to see 1st avenue closed to traffic from 7th st. to 4th st. No one walks on the sidewalks down there anyways, lets take back the street! Great idea IMO, but only for Friday and Saturday night from April to November. Good idea. And you could re-pave that stretch with granite cobblestones!

Re: Minneapolis & St. Paul Fantasies and Speculations
One of my long-time fantasies is that US Army Corps of Engineers would remove the upper lock and dam and restore St. Anthony Falls to what it looked like before the mills went in.
