Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

I believe MAC contributed to the airport tunnel costs as the light rail is also used as the connector between the two terminals. The Kenilworth tunnel exists because the right-of-way is too constricted to accommodate freight, light rail, and bikes. Met Council tried to reroute the freight, but from ...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Those express routes are all reverse commute lines and the buses would likely be running empty to do a second commute trip anyways. I think the Northstar Extension to St Cloud would be very well used especially with students at SCSU. Even if commuter ridership is permanently gone, there's a good opp...

Re: Rochester

I believe the state of Minnesota subsidizes some intercity service. Wisconsin does as well. I think the van and commuter services are already getting the job done. It seems that frequency is valued over capacity, which is why vans are used. I would guess that the companies operating the routes would...

Re: Rochester

There's at least two van shuttle companies that operate between MSP airport and Rochester. There's probably 20 trips or so each way daily.

There's also a commuter route between the Bloomington 28th Ave light rail station and Rochester.

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

I believe it's only running at 90 mph. For some reason 110 mph operations are delayed. I can't remember where I saw that, may have been on the Railroad.net forums.

The new City of Minneapolis website does not appear to have a streetcar page or any of the previous planning documents posted.

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

I see the issue with hybrids as they are quite dependent on stop-and-go traffic which the Twin Cities has relatively little of. Outside of a few major bus routes it seems most stops are skipped on an average run as well. Most cities have shyed away from hybrids already, but Seattle has an entirely h...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

New Blue Line routes for consideration. Surprisingly, Penn did not make a comeback. Everything under analysis now is either on Broadway or Lowry. Orange/Lowry route: Lowry to Washington Red route: Broadway to Washington Navy route: Broadway to 94 to 7th Yellow route: Broadway to Lyndale to Plymouth ...

Shame that they didn't try to make them better. That was one of the key components of the UPA grant.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Aren't freeways generally designed to be safe at speeds significantly in excess of the posted limit? The most dangerous conditions are where traffic bottlenecks and goes from high-speed to low-speed in a short distance. 35W south was given variable speed limits back in 2009, but I am not sure how su...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

I'm wondering if maybe the cost of providing office space gets overstated? My math on this may be (probably is) terrible, but let's say the average office set up has 200sf/ employee (that's their actual office space plus their share of common space), and then let's say that the office space costs $...

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Douglas to Lake St)

Yes, the B Line plan is to stop on Lake/Lagoon at Hennepin. So far the plan for the E Line is to stop at the transit center which makes those transfers difficult. They could probably easily put a transit lane on the block that is missing it. It really only needs a right turn lane and a straight lane...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

I am looking forward to going back to the office, mostly because my commute isn't terrible and WFH has taken up some space at home that I'd rather use for other things. It's also just lonely at home in general. A lot of companies were moving towards reduced office space before the pandemic to save c...

The college has about 10,000 students and is probably a bigger traffic generator than the Target Campus.

Zane is a way stronger corridor from the residential perspective, but Broadway has the major shopping center (Brooklyn Blvd), the community college (85th), and the Target Campus (Oak Grove).

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

BYD does have 60' electric buses. Albuquerque rejected their order due to quality issues and had to order New Flyers. Indianapolis also had issues with their BYD artics but it seems that they may have overcome them. Palmdale-Lancaster has a lot of BYD buses, but there's a few articles out there that...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

Met Council is going to make purchases of 40' and 60' buses which will cover needs over the next few years. It's probably wise to delay electrics a few more years, hopefully they are more mature by then. I wonder how Metro Transit's electric experience compares to Duluth (they have had electrics for...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

I think it's a bit obtuse of them to so easily write off a station at France. It doesn't add any additional travel time, and they're compromising station spacing elsewhere. Personally I prefer a 1/4-1/3 mile stop spacing so that the local buses can be removed to prevent situations where extra servic...

Siemens has a "streetcar" which is the same as the new light rail vehicles, but it's 10 feet shorter. I believe San Diego and Salt Lake City use this model.

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

Very cool to see them pushing for (or at least mentioning) a dedicated lane. This is basically the biggest missing feature in the arterial BRT network so far. I really hope they consider a few extra stops on Lake St. Adding Dupont (serving Cub Foods), Pleasant (serving Karmel Mall), and 12th Ave (Po...
