Re: MSP Airport
Didn't Rybak get his start before he was mayor as an organizer against the airport expansion? For better or worse airport noise is always going to be on his mind. I was fine chatting HSR, but I know some people on here like to split threads like no one's business so I didn't want to offend. See my ...

Re: 815 14th Ave SE
Also, this thing butts right up against the pedestrian bridge over the tracks.. any way they can consider upgrading/replacing it while they're at it? While I like the wood and think it's kinda unique, it lends the "1940s near a railroad hellhole" to the area. Would this project make a conn...

Re: MSP Airport
...Sorry, back on topic as this is an MSP thread not a HSR thread... I'd like to see some more info on the RNAV stuff as well as projected flight info over the course of the time period.. how many jets of what size, how loud they are, how much air pollution they spew, etc to make a judgment on if 20...

Re: MSP Airport
I was utterly shocked by the number as well, but I was just linking this study done: http://www.midwesthsr.org/2011-economic-study-costs Keep in mind that 17b GBP is ~$25b at today's exchange rate, and that the train distance is 308 miles vs the MSP-Rochester-Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago distance is 44...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Might want to look in to the Atlanta Falcons stadium financing proposal, or how the Patriots and Steelers built their stadiums...However, the reality is that's how these things are built.

Re: MSP Airport
This potential (increased traffic, decrease in flights) should not be discounted in the HSR discussion. Going from downtown Minneapolis (or St. Paul) to downtown Chicago in four hours beats the airport experience hands down. After actually getting to the airport (by car, taxi, LRT or bus), you have...

Re: 301 Walnut (Sally's Building)
Out of state to in-state tuition ratio at the U is very low compared to many schools out there. The U has raised in-state tuition rates while holding out-state rates relatively flat in an effort to bring in a more diverse background (which I'm not sure I agree with as it's a flagship state universit...

Re: 815 14th Ave SE
The convenience of this building will be extremely lower than that of dinkytdome, sydney, 412, UTEC, House of Hanson Site, and above purple onion. That was my point. Again, if we're talking about a 2.5 block walk to UTEC vs. the sites you mention for convenience, I guess I'm not sure the state of A...

Re: 815 14th Ave SE
^^ Won't there be a convenience store at the current UTEC site, merely 2.5 blocks from the west side of this building? Isn't there House of Hanson just on the other side of 5th? And a CVS at 15th and 4th, 6.5 blocks away? I mean, at worst, even if this were opening today, the longest distance to a r...

Re: 301 Walnut (Sally's Building)
Except that landlords in the U area typically require notice of if the tenants will renew or not around Feb-March, and start posting their stuff now, with most college kids locking up where they're living the next year before spring term ends (especially the ones currently in dorms who will not be o...

Re: 301 Walnut (Sally's Building)
In this specific case you have a boatload of people attending the U of M, and some can afford it while others may not be able to, yet everyone has to be on campus throughout the day. Those who have rich parents or aren't aware of the ramifications of the debt they're taking on can certainly afford t...

Re: Vikings Stadium
For these things to happen the city will need to drastically reduce parking requirements and how they zone areas (or don't).

Re: 301 Walnut (Sally's Building)
With all this development going on, one would think those laws of supply and demand would start kicking in and prove my theory wrong about developers charging whatever the hell they want simply because they can, right? Especially when the same 3 developers own basically all the mid to high-rise stru...

Re: Return Downtown Streets to Two-Way
^^ and reducing the number and width of lanes on the ones that remain. I'm ok with a one-way if the lanes are skinnier (encouraging slower driving) and fewer (opening up room for any of the following: dedicated bike lanes, dedicated transit lanes, wider sidewalks, more paid on-street parking).

Re: Surdyk's/US Bank/West Photo Block
Could there ever be more of a cruel way to say 'no' to helping low-income people than by refusing to allow housing for them in your own neighborhood? Heaven forbid... is housing worse than vacant, ugly parking lots?

Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)
I don't have a genius idea of where this could go though, as DTE is probably already too pricey for this kind of lower-intensity development.......perhaps somewhere in Nordeast? DTE is quite literally 40-50% surface parking lots, with many municipally-subsidized garages. Hard to believe a bunch of ...

Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)
This is an interesting conversation. A lot of it seems to be focusing on an imaginary couple in their late 20s with a toddler. Out of curiosity, can anyone imagine a downtown where a family with, say, three teenagers could live? Just as a thought exercise. For some reason, that seems harder than tu...

Re: Return Downtown Streets to Two-Way
http://www.uctc.net/access/41/access41_twoway.shtml That link is to a snippet from a research paper about the effectiveness of two way versus one way street networks. Apparently two way street networks are more efficient then some think. The paper goes further, saying "two-way networks are oft...

Re: Plymouth Building Apartments - (12 6th Street South)
Is it possible to build a 3 bedroom apartment in new construction and still have it competitive with single family homes? Even in the city itself you can get quite a lot of house for not a lot of money, if you're willing to go into certain neighborhoods. The problem is that there's still demand for...
