Re: Return Downtown Streets to Two-Way

Stop worrying about facilitating the amount of cars that would cause major traffic jams and things will solve themselves. Convert most to 2-ways, get rid of lights at intersections with a small roundabouts to calm speeds and allow for free-flowing traffic in all directions. And hey, if it's still gr...

Re: Plymouth Building Apartments - (12 6th Street South)

Um, you don't. Those spaces are pretty much for singles. Also, the two people I mentioned earlier are both 32 years old. Again, 400 square feet is bigger than you think. Go to IKEA and look at the 400 sq foot mock ups they have. Isn't as bad as you think. For couples and couples with kids, they wil...

Re: University of Minnesota

Pretty weakly written article, but I think the argument is true. Most traditional undergrads (18-21) do not get off campus enough to explore the cities around them. Then again, it's pretty hard to drink anywhere away from campus if you aren't of legal age. I know as a freshman living in Comstock ba...

Re: Vikings Stadium Legislation/Financing Package

It's just, you seem to have good judgment on many topics Nick. You clearly understand the facts on this issue. I just don't understand why you're so snide on this topic. Maybe I just don't get where you’re coming from since I don't care about football? The Vikings stadium debate in general was/is o...

Re: Plymouth Building Apartments - (12 6th Street South)

So how do you convince a married couple to live in 400 sqft? Or a couple with a dog? Or a couple with 1-2 kids to live in 1,000 sqft, especially if it's as expensive as a 2,300 sqft home 10-12 miles away?

Also, I'm all about downsizing, but 20x20 is 20x20 no matter how you cut it.

Re: General Suburb News

And that people continue to shop there to save literally $0.10 on an item they're buying frustrates me even more. Ignoring the car and gas they needed to get there, the money the city put in to TIF and reduced property taxes, the amount the state put in to build interchanges to support getting to th...

Re: Bottineau Corridor (Blue Line Extension)

I'm glad Mpls is not allowing P&Rs for their transit stations. Once you allow it, it immediately stops being as useful of a transit oriented development as it could be. If a 20,000+ sqft parcel directly abutting the station is dedicated (mostly) to cars, how will the area ever thrive for people ...

Re: 400 Marquette Avenue

Bummer that we continue to build skyways instead of drive good street-life, IMO, and the above-ground parking is also a bummer. But not going to complain too much about a 30 story building housing people right downtown. Thanks for the update, Nick!

Re: Vikings Stadium Legislation/Financing Package

To anyone saying it 'couldn't be done' without so much public financing... there you go. The VIkings can also now shut their mouths when they claim they're making the largest investment in joint-venture (public/private) NFL stadium history or whatever their claim was (which is asinine given inflatio...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

Wait, what? Are you claiming that the rate from 1980 to 1990, and for that matter the previous decade - both of which average ~33.5% growth over each decade, is the same as the growth that occurred between 1990 and 2000, which you clearly note is 54.7%?? The following decade (2000-2010) proves this ...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

I tend to believe that it's not unreasonable to spend some money removing glaring bottlenecks from the highway system at the same time that we're building out our transit system. For that reason, I'd never lump the 494-169 interchange together with the St. Croix Bridge. My personal opinion, but I t...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

I liked K-State's as well, but I HATED how suburban and commercialized the tenants were. On an aside, I realize it's their job to promote their vision and project, but some of these guys are assuming that downtown East will add the equivalent to a Downtown St. Paul in infrastructure over the next 3...

Re: Vikings Stadium

You've been to a Gophers baseball game before, right? There will be a lot of events, no doubt, but an event that only attracts 2,000 people will have absolutely no bearing on the economics of area parking lots. Totally agree. In fact, for events like that, I would think there could/should be enough...

Re: 301 Walnut (Sally's Building)

Awesome. Glad to see the "Sally's" sign on the rendering wasn't just a placeholder. Now if we can get the tattoo parlor to take the third retail slot instead of Toppers, I'll be really happy. That was my biggest worry. Without it, where will I get my 40th tattoo after a night of binge dri...

Re: Northrop Auditorium Renovation

The interior offices and band space was hideous as well, very bad condition inside the building. I was in band at about the latest time we were housed in Northrop (missed TCF by just a couple years...). I wouldn't say it was hideous inside by any stretch. It was a music library, instrument repair a...

Re: Vikings Stadium

I find the suggestion that any development would have happened if the city hadn't discouraged it completely ludicrous. But I remain persuadable. I just want to see a contemporaneous source (from the decade or two after the Metrodome was built)saying this was city policy. I don't think the city was ...

Re: Loring Park Apartments - (1368 LaSalle Avenue)

Agree with mattaudio on that one.. The only bad thing about plazas up like that is it effectively removes it from part of the public realm - the space is solely used by the residents of the tower. That's fine if the street-front is good space and the city does its part in providing ample park space ...
