This. Not strange at all. Autonomous vehicles are today's PRT in that regard: a plausible-sounding reason not to do transit. Expect to hear a lot about it in upcoming legislative sessions.

Re: Roof Depot site
The small area plan suggests moving the 3rd Precinct police station on Lake Street to the roof depot site. I hope the city is considering this, as it would open up 3rd Precinct police station site for redevelopment, which includes several surface parking lots and a great corner site at the corner o...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings
I love the notion of a knee-jerk constitutional moratorium on legislative moratoria premised on their knee-jerk bad-faith approach to problems.

Me too.^ Agree 100%. Electronic voting scares me. It should scare every computing professional.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
I meant to vote Hodges - Dehn - Frey but for some reason voted Hodges - Frey - Dehn so I guess I wasn't part of a camp. Actually I was a member of the "I like Betsy and I'll use my other votes to try and keep Hoch out of office" camp.

Re: Suburban City Councils, shenanigans
I think we can all agree that both RCV (no primary) and "Top 2" nonpartisan/"jungle" primaries are WAAAAY better than the current system we have for state and national partisan elections (first past the post, choosing the lesser of evils, reluctance to support 3rd party candidat...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Yeah, the exact number of combinations doesn't really matter. You could pretty much keep the ranking of voters in some sort of table or entry from first to sixth (or whatever) and once the first choice drops out, push their other ranks "ahead" so the "first choice" vote is actua...

Sorry not sorry if this isn't the best place to post this, but I read an interesting article about Winnipeg discovering an unexpected (but predictable) downside of LED traffic lights - they have to be cleared of snow. http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/manitoba/winnipeg-led-traffic-lights-snow-1.437...

Cool, I didn't realize we still had any more of the first Siemens style being delivered.

Re: Type II LRVs - Siemens S70
HuskyGrad, are you sure these aren't those? The numbers are still sequential in the 2xx range, but I'm not sure metro transit will treat the new variant as a type III - they're the same as type II except the seats, and some minor other details, so they may still be considered type II.

Too bad they don't have a video of the "C" section inside, which I think is the only difference between II and IIa vehicles.

I wonder if Met Council would allow this to slip ahead of SW if there continue to be issues with SW and this one reaches that point.

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)
To me, this plan makes an awful lot of sense given current ridership, as long as they design it so that dedicated use can creep in to the shared segment as ridership patterns evolve.

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
Yes, wanting to honor the Dakota from whom we stole is such a shameful place for us to be... Not dissimilar from tearing out the trees and naming the suburbs after them. More seriously, Lake Calhoun got that name at a time when everything was being named after white men who'd had big roles in settl...

Wow, reality left this post a while ago. How about midtown fantasies move elsewhere and this thread stick to the actual Riverview project?

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)
Build the Riverview corridor as is, with a straight shot to the airport. Build the Midtown LRT Phase 1 from West Lake (Green) to Lake St. (Blue). Build the Midtown LRT Phase 2 from 46th Street to Sibley Plaza, so that Midtown ultimately runs from Hopkins to downtown Saint Paul. Problem solved. I'll...

Re: Los Angeles
So does anybody know LA reasonably well? I'm thinking of running the LA Marathon. Could I stay in Santa Monica and expect to be able to get into downtown via transit reasonably well? The Expo Line looks promising but the city has a reputation for being hard to get around without a car.
