Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit
If anything happens in the Greenway I expect it will be regular two-track light rail tracks, with a fence separating the tracks from the bike path. It may be proposed for single-car trains so they can claim it's different and more like a "streetcar" - recall that our "light rail"...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I suppose I write it that way because the elevated idea (clearly nerfed) was presented only as a consideration of attempting to preserve the current street design. My logic follows that a tunnel would not have the support columns in the roadway and that the project team would present the redeeming ...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I think they'll find more political opposition to elevated than to tunnel, and with good reason. Although tourists love the feel that the El gives Chicago and that the elevated lines in Paris give, they really do divide communities and darken the streets that people live and walk on. Those are much ...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings
After following the FTA New Starts programs for so long, I'm always surprised at how cheap basic freight infrastructure is. No wonder they don't want to give up their corridors, if they can repair a bridge for $200k and then they can convince somebody else to do it for them.

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors
Yes. that's my sense too. The "dedicated" lanes are too short and mostly in the sections where it's easiest, and hence least valuable. The station upgrades will be nice, and the offboard payment and multi-door boarding will help, but I don't think the bus lanes will be nearly enough to fun...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago
Years ago when I spoke with the passenger rail guy at MnDOT about this he indicated that they were redoing the crossings and the signaling to allow operation above 79; my recollection is 90 and not 110, but I could be recalling incorrectly. There's a lot of obstacles to operating at higher speeds. I...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors
They do plan on implementing bus only lanes along lake st, that should definitely help! Yeah, that's true. I suppose that, in combination with some eventually-rolled-out signal-holding will help a bit. And of course it will have fewer stops than the 21 too. I hope I'm wrong, perhaps twenty years of...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors
I don't know, color me skeptical but I have a hard time imagining that the B line will be fast enough and high enough capacity to operate as the spine that it theoretically could be. Riding from Uptown to your circled "5" currently is painfully slow and I'm not confident that A Line style ...

Re: E Line Arterial BRT
I do like the upgrades the "aBRT" service provides on the A Line, but if anybody thinks it's "Light Rail on Wheels" they're delusional. It's the baseline for good, reliable bus service and nothing more.

Probably too much to wish for, but maybe they'll remove the drive thru approval and/or Starbucks will voluntarily get rid of the drive thru.

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar
Routing the light rail to the back never made sense and it continues not to make sense. The platforms in the back were designed for intercity heavy rail, while the streetcars and local transportation always served the front. I'm sure logic will prevail.

Re: Hiawatha-Lake - Minnehaha - Downtown Longfellow
The Wendy's / AutoZone area is disappointing, but totally understandable, to be rebuilt just as they were given the circumstances of their demolition. But these low-intensity uses are still better than the barren sea of Target's outer parking lot right at the corner, which never has any cars in it (...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit
I think it's a realistic expectation that a single LRV, identical to the ones used on the Green and Blue Lines but not in train, would serve as the "streetcar" for this line. Same goes for the Riverview line. Our LRVs are what's called a "tram" in Europe, and the distinction betw...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit
I'll be interested to see how well this works on Marshall, it's a tight corridor for everything they're trying to do on it. I do think that's probably part of the issue with floating bus stops there, it would make things even tighter. Another consideration might be snow clearing in the winter, as Sa...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
I was less interested in this line when I first dug into Twin Cities transit planning shortly after moving here in 1999, but if memory serves, this went southwest while the reserved ROW along 394/12 was intended to link Lake Minnetonka to the city via light rail - so this line was never envisioned g...
