Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image
They mentioned Hymie's but not Vintage Music Company. Good. Don't want any of those Edisons or Victors damaged.

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018
How many of those folks will vote in midterms? I think Trump/Republicans are stronger in MN than people think. If people aren't happy with what's happening, who is in the Governor's office? Not Trump and not Republicans. Hope I'm wrong, but preparing like I'm not. I think I have settled on Walz as m...

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018
This sounds like a lot of magical thinking to me. This poll means something and we'd better heed it. As Hillary found out, it's hard for a party to win three terms in a row.

Re: Southwest - General Topics (Linden Hills, Fulton, et al)
Careful with the "disingenuous" label. It's pretty presumptuous to assume someone is intentionally disguising motives. Very likely the author cares about the things he says he cares about. You may disagree but he is spot on that everyone needs to have a voice. I mean, obviously one is not ...

Our first experience with Drury (in its hometown no less) led to the "Dreary" moniker. We've avoided them ever since.

Re: Fiber Internet and TV Services, Cord Cutting
So, for a neophyte, why would one want a static vs dynamic IP? I just got a Synology NAS and it has all kinds of useful functions you can export to the internet. It can use dynamic DNS but I prefer to have something more stable. I'm going to move my e-mail onto it (thus necessitating better stabili...

I just called USI and it turns out home service gets one free static IP if you ask. They just don't advertise it.
Cool!

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map
That's a nice, concise piece. The way the city conducts its Small Area Plan process certainly does lend an air of "compact" with the neighborhoods, and frankly, if residents put in hundreds of hours crafting a plan, it's not unreasonable to have some expectation that the plan will be gener...

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map
All fair points. I believe developers are going to seek variances no matter what. As we all know, our zoning code is in desperate need of updating and modernizing. It's not just re-zoning that we need. Indeed, I think that might actually be harmful in several ways without updating the code itself.

Re: Fiber Internet and TV Services, Cord Cutting
Has anyone looked into getting a static IP from USI? There's nothing on their website about it except for a FAQ entry that mentions business-class services.

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map
Good piece, Matt! My only quibble is the statement that six-story buildings are going up because we don't allow missing middle. I don't believe for a second that if we allowed missing middle, we'd have fewer six-story apartments. That argument just doesn't hold water and it's not going to convince a...

Re: RE: Re: City living trends and predictions
Isn't it strange that you always hear about autonomous vehicles as a reason not to invest in transit, but not as a reason to cut back on subsidized on- or off-street car storage? (Let alone a reason to stop building even more car storage!?!?) Not strange at all. Autonomous vehicles are today's PRT ...

Re: City living trends and predictions
Alleys are already almost-woonerfs. Make them officially woonerfs. And put high-capacity transit in some of them. We used to run streetcars in some alleys, though those were somewhat wider than the typical Minneapolis alley. One-way transit pairs should be feasible. We could also designate some of t...
