Re: Subsidized Housing

I simply don't see how subsidized housing can truly help that many people. We've tried this experiment with rent control, and it is an abject failure. Both liberal and conservative economists agree that it is harmful, so it is somewhat surprising to see a few folks here so vehemently defending simil...

Re: Saint Paul Union Depot

This is great news! I'm curious what the clearance is beneath the waiting room. Amtrak Superliners are 16' 2", which is why they have the "bridge" at the end of the waiting room. I read that Megabuses generally are 13' tall. It certainly would be better if they stopped at the bus plat...

Re: Former Macy's Site

I'm really curious about some of the long-shuttered spaces in the store. Is the Iron Horse restaurant still there? Furniture department? Lower level Men's department? What was that oil tank found in the basement used for? The empty spaces within the downtown Minneapolis Macy's are delightfully creep...

Re: 7 Corners Hardware

Yes, but hotels get reflagged all of the time -- that doesn't mean anything, and it certainly doesn't add any capacity. I'm not saying that they shouldn't build a hotel here -- but based on everything else I've heard, it does seem a bit ifffy. Rebranding within the same same corporate structure is ...

Re: 7 Corners Hardware

I'm sort of surprised that people think there's demand for a hotel here -- I've always heard that St. Paul hotel occupancy numbers are nothing to write home about. Someone must think there is demand for an upscale l uxury hotel. The nearby Crowne Plaza - St Paul Riverfront is being upgraded to an I...

Re: New Senate office building (St. Paul Capitol Hill)

I'm sure there could be some shuffling of the office space in the Capitol area to accommodate those who have a real need to be near the capitol, and those who work for the government but don't truly need to be quite as close to the capitol. There is no way that all the staff who work in the area act...

Designed by the world-renowned architectural firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the office tower is an impressive granite structure with recessed windows forming an attractive grid pattern.

Re: New Senate office building (St. Paul Capitol Hill)

Instead of yet another subsidy to build a palace for the elite on the paid for by us commonfolk, why not put these politicians in the Macy's building and kill two birds with one stone?

Re: New 3M R&D lab building

I love when I have a meeting in Building 220 (the 3M tower). You can see both downtowns and the Cathedral, all lined up at a slight angle. Would make for some great photos for those who have a nice camera.

Re: New 3M R&D lab building

I debated about where to put it but their website lists their headquarters in St Paul . Pick up any 3M product, and it says it was developed in St Paul. And working at 3M I can tell you that every employee refers to the headquarters as being in Saint Paul. Plus, you can literally spit out the window...

New 3M R&D lab building

http://www.startribune.com/business/222445901.html I'm surprised no one has commented on this, but 3M is building a new 400,000 sq ft building on their St. Paul/Maplewood campus. Interesting that Maplewood had some paranoia about 3M moving -- where would they go? 3M has invested A LOT of money into ...

Re: Former Macy's Site

Yeah, I went to a film festival a few years back that took place in the former Galtier Cinema 4 as well as a couple meetings there, so I got to see the old screening rooms of my early childhood. The place basically needs to be stripped to the bare drywall. While Venue A and the lobby look nice enoug...

Re: Former Macy's Site

St. Paul City Council Member Dave Thune, who represents downtown, said he’d love to see a movie complex on the site as part of a larger retail development — perhaps a factory outlet mall — along with affordable or high-end housing. Galtier Plaza. MN World Trade Center. Town Square. How many of thes...

Re: MSP Airport

I have never yet set foot in the "new" Humphery Terminal. I remember the old one being pretty dreary, with no windows and not enough seats in the waiting area. It looked cheap and uncomfortable. I've been flying a lot for work lately, and I have to say that I am proud we have such a nice a...

Re: Twin Cities Underground Rail

I don't know if we'll ever see underground rail in the Twin Cities, to be honest. The anti-rail pro-automobile crowd squawks so loudly about any sort of transit improvements that it makes me wonder if they ever leave their exurban enclaves. What is far more realistic is seeing a streetcar travel dow...

Re: Former Macy's Site

Convert the building to office space? You have to be kidding me. This building is a bunker, a fortress. Sure, you can punch windows in it and reclad it -- but who would want to work in it? There is very little natural light. Hopefully their plans dazzle and amaze, because at this point I am disappoi...

Re: Hwy 610

Well, while I'm not a big fan of the Pawlenty Highway at least they *are* finishing it so it can serve a useful purpose. It's been kind of an odd hanger-on, partially finished, with swaths of empty land and projects around it in limbo. 610 is the "Pawlenty Highway"? In what way? I remembe...

MPR has more photos of the space. Just like with the Union Depot prior to renovation, it is delightfully decrepit!
