Re: Ward 3

After the Red Wedding, I don't think I can vote for a Frey.
What was the "Red Wedding"?

Re: Nic on Fifth - (455 Nicollet Mall)

Powers was bought out by Donaldsons in 1985, but the signs on the building stayed up for many years afterward. It was a really cool old department store.

Re: Soo Line Building Apartments - (501 Marquette Avenue)

midwestsouth - The Soo Line is right on the LRT line, so you would have easy access to a lot of different places. I just looked at their website and it sounds like it will be ready for occupancy in about three weeks. It looks like there's still some exterior work left to do. The quarter block immedi...

Re: Nicollet Mall

While the idea of this is sort of cool, it seems poor planning to locate it at IDS, where there is currently the best connection between street level and skyway in the whole system, and where you'll be maiming an architecturally significant urban ensemble. Exactly! There are plenty of places to imp...

Yes, and I have heard that the original mechanicals were all very cheap and started to fail very soon after the buildings were completed.

Re: St. Anthony Main Movie Theater

That's great news. I really like that theater, even though it's become somewhat decrepit. I appreciate the Main's more adult orientation that you don't find in the suburbs. I am puzzled by part about upgrading to digital technology. I thought that all theaters had to do that a while back.

I like areas like that because you kind of have to Discover them.
I think you've hit on the reason for the divided opinions on Peavey. You have to be slightly more adventurous than the average person to really appreciate it.

Re: Peavey Plaza Reconstruction Project

Well I certainly wouldn't call Peavey a "pile of concrete crap", however I do believe that Friedberg's design for Loring Greenway was a lot better. I seem to recall a study that found people naturally tend to avoid public spaces that are either elevated above or sunk below street level. My...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)

Municipalization seems like an incredibly stupid idea, even without the threat of Xcel moving. Aren't our electric rates comparatively low already? Sometimes I just can't believe how dumb our city council is.

Re: Downtown Office Market

A long, long time ago, Minnegasco, the forerunner of Centerpoint, had an office on Nicollet Mall with a retail showroom. I think it was on the block where City Center is.

Re: Superior Plating site

That brick could have lasted forever, until some genius had the bright idea to paint it... Really? How have you reached that conclusion? It's a fallacy that everything built 100 years ago was high quality. Honestly, I'm rather surprised at the outpouring of sentiment over this place. Have any of yo...

Re: Superior Plating site

No one is more of a preservation zelot than me, but this is one building that I'm glad to see go. I live several blocks away and that thing has been an eyesore in the neighborhood for decades. The original brick was probably very cheap and is literally disintegrating. There are also structural issue...

Re: Soo Line Building Apartments - (501 Marquette Avenue)

I wonder how they will finish the area around the window arches? Originally it was carved granite, but I imagine it would be difficult to match the existing stone and level of detail. I really enjoy going by this building and checking out the recent progress. It's a beautiful old building and a very...

Re: 510 Marquette Avenue

I think If I were doing it I would have just left the tower part alone and concentrated on making the base look more attractive, especially the street level. The building is very dreary from the street - the dark arcade and the fact that you actually have to step down from the sidewalk to go through...

Re: IDS Center

I'm not sure, but I think the IDS went through a number of design revisions. I remember seeing a proposed rendering of the tower on the cover page of a 1968 IDS annual report (this was in the mid 1980's at the Wilson Library) that depicted "scenic" exterior elevators running up the sides i...

Re: Norway House (913 E Franklin)

What a cool project that will bring more people to this area. In some ways though, wish they would've chosen a site downtown. Downtown needs more centralized cultural institutions for a draw. Yes, I agree that Downtown or the riverfront would have been nice. I suppose the fact that this neighborhoo...

Re: Rampton Apartments (201 2nd Ave SE)

The labor center across the street also had some plans to build apartments on the parking lot and drive thru bank next to their building. I think there was a press release late last year, but I have heard nothing since.

Re: Old MPS HQ - 807 Broadway

The surrounding Logan Park neighborhood had a lot of input on this. They favored a development that would bring in jobs over housing. There was a lot of concern that the loss of jobs when the Board of Ed. moved out would have a negative impact on surrounding businesses. I really have to question whe...
