Re: Downtown Minneapolis - News & General Topics
But I'm 100% with Alex. It shouldn't be a on the sidewalk and it shouldn't be idling. Seems like exactly where good old fashion foot patrol would make sense, but what do I know? Agree... getting big "500 more cops hired for the NYC subways who sit around on their phones and watch turnstile jum...

Saw the plans for this posted to the Planning Commission COW. The variance request for the sideyard setback (8' off of the common property line right next to a house, 6 stories tall) seems like the kind of "developer's problem, not the city's problem" that should be denied. Here's the pac...

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West
As an individual I think there could be much better land use here, yes, but there are very few billion dollar companies headquartered in Minneapolis and it is in the best interest of our tax base to keep Graco around.

I heard a rumor this property sold but nothing is reflected in Hennepin County records yet. I'm super pumped about south Nicollet filling in with buildings taller than 3 stories

Re: Target Center Renovation
I will happily argue that there is no legitimate public value in a billion dollar publicly subsidized pro sports stadium at the intersection of our $5 billion+ rail system, but that's not why I called it that. Even though taxpayers aren't paying for this part, the fact that it's had to be re-skinned...

Re: Target Center Renovation
While I wasn't in favor of spending more public $ on sports facilities at the time, I think the way the renovation deal was structured actually costs Minneapolis less in the long run. Even though we spent an additional $100M+ it also included refinancing debt at historic low rates. Plus it pushes ou...

A friend that works at a fancy downtown restaurant says while the sheer numbers of people aren't back yet, the big spenders are going wild and spending much more than usual.

Registration to be a delegate to the citywide and ward DFL endorsement conventions is now open until April 30. All online this year. https://minneapolisdfl.org/ David Brauer is keeping a list of everyone that's running for all offices: www.tinyurl.com/minneapolis21 We're halfway through the month n...

Re: Nicollet-Lake Area - to Kmart...and beyond!
So... I'm on the most recent wedgelive podcast. The first 30 minutes are about caucuses but the second half is about random city topics, and I go on about using re-opening Nicollet as an opportunity to create a Nicollet Mall South and to save the amazing battleship mural on the back of the Kmart bui...

As a neighbor following this project from the beginning, back in 2012, I want to say the developers that finished this project have done a great job with both the new building and the original substation. Peep those new, well-insulated muntin windows that match the originals!

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion
Since you're here, can I ask why the Minneapolis DFL insists on giving endorsement to just a single candidate in each race? In a basically one-party town, with ranked-choice elections, I'd very much prefer a system where the Mpls DFL endorses all candidates that agree to a platform or central tenet...

Local party chair checking in. You've probably heard/assumed the endorsements will be online this year. Details on the 2021 process are live at www.minneapolisdfl.org. Pretty easy - sign up in April, vote for delegates in mid-May, participate in the conventions early June if you're elected a delegat...

It's both (outlet + groundwater) because the course is towards the end of the Minnehaha Creek watershed. Upstream impacts in Minnetonka, SLP, Edina, Minneapolis (more hardscape, runoff, and so on) start to manifest in south Minneapolis. Not just the park/golf course but also flooded basements in Nok...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics
re: developer demand for the Lyn-Lake parking lot. I randomly started following a few developers on Twitter and it sounds like the Lyn-Lake submarket (however they define it) is having issues filling units in newly built buildings. So there's probably not an appetite for taking on a project that hug...

I read the Biz Journals article about the proposed academic building, which led me to this article about East Downtown from December 2015, before "East Town" was invented. https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/print-edition/2015/12/18/the-big-deal-about-east-downtown.html The Kraus-Anders...

And doing that same concept but on the current site, next to a similar sum of rail investment wouldn't work because...? It would work there too, just not as "central" as DTE, where there was a totally blown opportunity to build much more housing without constriction from stroads/viaduct. ...

Re: RBC Gateway (Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 519'
Our best option was to build the stadium at Royalston/Farmers Market and create a "stadium district" while moving the Farmer's Market to where the Metrodome was, on the intersection of $2-$5 billion in rail investment. Perhaps it could have been built indoors with many apartments, like Rot...

One of the best things in Chicago is called SummerDance. Four nights a week they teach you the dance and then have live music for the rest of the evening. Like, ranging from hip hop, square dancing, klezmer, and so on. More of that kind of programming, pls!
