Twin Cities Underground Rail

To me, the need would seem obvious, and currently and historically there are actually a couple tunnels. Streets and highways are near or at capacity, and buses are full, sometimes 'Army' full! Transit increases on surface streets must negotiate this load. Our weather stalls all traffic, causes accid...

Re: 26th / 28th Streets in South Minneapolis

Alternatives? I do think that charging a 'tonnage' on autos (ala commercial vehicles) would be helpful. Lighter cars take less space on roads, are more efficient and by definition take less to manufacture. Less mass causes less damage to roads and objects they strike. It's difficult to argue that yo...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor

Our weather should be a consideration when comparing to other cities. While many cities have inclement weather, we have it for sooo long, and it's soooo nasty. It's hard not to feel sorry for anyone standing outside waiting for a bus or train when wind is blowing at -10°F, and watching a bus slide s...

Re: Transit Crime

Saw the article this AM, at first I got the same impression that there was a a needless link to Hiawatha line, but the shear number of break ins (and the seriousness- The story reported thief(s) first broke into the buildings) did justify informing the public that this was occurring in vicinity of s...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

There is a thought that automated cars would increase the capacity of freeways substantially by eliminating bad driver behavior. Interesting observation. IF guidance were sophisticated enough to link to each adjacent vehicle, less buffer would be required (think the 'two second' following rule) Lan...

Re: 26th / 28th Streets in South Minneapolis

What you're doing is trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. It's clear that the only reason you want to make changes is to "disincentivize driving" or "Traffic Calming", both used here as code words for making it tougher to drive. Autos have given us huge amounts of freedo...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor

How many of you drove down University frequently during heavy construction? The 'dig' was surprisingly deep. I wonder how much more it would have really cost to bury most of it. I drive a very old lady to her appointments frequently and try to avoid crossing University as she complains about what th...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT)

Why should people who live along 26th & 28th have to get lung cancer because you don't like the freeway? How many minutes of savings are worth how many years taken off the life of a neighborhood resident? We've let stoopid suburb peepul frame the debate around convenience for too long - public ...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor

Subway Subway Subway Subway Elevated rail would have to be at least 60-80 feet high for it not to interfere with the skyways. Both would get the vehicle out of the weather and allow it to move without interference from peds, bicycles (Just talking about a Rte 6 ride stuck behind a bicycle on Hennep...

Re: Bus Stop on 7th Street at Nicollet Mall

There is still construction occurring, but the sign said the 19:

WILL NO LONGER STOP at 7th and Nicollet Mall, after opening. It will continue to serve the other lines.

One way to solve a problem.

Re: Public Transit News and Happenings

Truly awesome transit project opens in Turkey! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24721779 Yeah for them! Back home, however, Us 'flatlanders' would like to open a 'starter' streetcar line, and are urged to, or do take painful compromises to get (relatively) uncomplicated rail projects completed.

Re: University Avenue Traffic Lane Modification Study

I almost always question the business community's bellows when ostreet parking removal is even suggested because I'm really not certain they have a firm grasp on where/how their customers visit their stores. You think Avenue Motors, Economy Muffler and Goodyear et al tire shops really need to condu...

Re: University Avenue Traffic Lane Modification Study

How is using a traffic lane for auto parking anti-car? Ask Lollipop: If the ultimate goal is to decrease the number of people driving cars ... And parking really won't be needed, if there's no cars. http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/183278871.html The Central spokeswoman came out and sai...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

It's amazing what you can do with statistics, if you want to. Here's some more from wikipedia, think they got it from census. If you care to dig further, there's a stat that shows EP as lilly White. The median income for a household in the city was $54,328, and the median income for a family was $10...

Re: Green Line (Central)

University was down to one lane in each direction - it resulted in carnage to businesses. 94 was the same distance from University during that time. The carnage was well publicized, I find it impossible to believe posters are unaware of this. My guess would be posters don't care about the cost as lo...

Re: Green Line (Central)

So the priority is to get rid of cars? Pretty much at any cost? There was a rather large change to University, so saying people don't like an idea because they're afraid of change doesn't make sense. Perhaps there could be something wrong wirh the merit of the idea. I'm not saying that the plan will...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

Of course if we had a proper network (you know with tunnels in the inner city) those from north could just walk down a staircase at Broadway and Emerson, get to Nicollet and 6th in less than 10 minutes, then just another staircase down to the SW Line which would get out to the deep suburbs in 25-30...
