Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Presumably, since they are the 3 most 'similar' candidates, I'm guessing the 2nds and 3rds are relatively evenly divided (Hodges 2nds and 3rds are mostly among Frey and Hoch, etc.). If that's the case, it's likely Frey. The interesting ranked choice situation is the case of Ginger Jentzen. Although ...

Re: Housing Market/Economics - General Topics
I'm definitely getting the sense that homes above the 250-300k range are moderating in price in South Mpls. I know it's fall and all, but we have both the home we live in and GF's small home that is renting out and planning to sell, so we've been watching values pretty closely. Houses in her 250k ra...

Re: Amazon's New HQ?
^Right. That's the other part that jumped out at me. Just like the benefits are realized over time, the theoretical $7B isn't an outlay today, but over many years as well. That would dramatically shorten the payback time. All that said, though, I'm in agreement with the opinion that investing this a...

The best term to use would probably be 'super-linear' growth, but no one knows what that means. I must admit that I've used 'exponential' in place of "faster than linear growth" for simplicity/understanding at times, and I'm an MSE with a math bachelor's. EDIT: ...and not to be difficult, ...

Nah that one says Taco Ron's. Big old difference. Anyways, this is pretty fake so carry on. I blame Cory Zurowski. Pending Taco War. What's next, Figlio space becomes Taco Don's?!? I actually got a chuckle from it, but my next thought is who actually has the time to think that idea is funny enough ...

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
Changing it to something that has some resonance for where we are as a society today makes more sense to me (although the rush of people falling all over themselves to give it this Dakota name of questionable provenance perhaps tells us an awful lot about where Minneapolis is today). Yes, wanting t...

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
I think that a lot of people saying "let's compromise and call it Lake Maka Ska" are really just objecting to the name change in a socially acceptable way... That doesn't make any sense. My feels on this, which really don't matter much, are that changing the name from Lake Calhoun to some...

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News
I'm not sure "waste of a liquor license" has any meaning anymore -- my understanding is that, unlike most other cities in the state, Minneapolis has the power to issue as many as they want as long as they meet the requirements. Does anybody have a list of the mythical grandfathered liquor...

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News
I wonder if the Country Bar/Blue Door will remain a full booze late night bar? Seems like a waste of a liquor license otherwise.

Strib is reporting it was six who left. EDIT: Whoops, they actually are referencing the City Pages article saying "a half dozen". They apparently tried to call them, though, and five didn't call back. Perhaps meaningless, but I think if you were on the campaign, you'd want to clear that up...

Re: Demolition of West Publishing / old jail
You could have a liner of residential (or office or whatever) looking out to the river side, but you're going to be left with a lot of space between that and the bluff if you're building a typical double-loaded layout above street level. Right. I think the way to think about this is that while it d...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
Assuming this moves forward, I'll stay cautiously optimistic. Thrivent has sort of set the bar relatively high for themselves with their fairly iconic (whoops) HQ. I think it would be a poor reflection on them if they moved from there into some humdrum new building.

Yeah, I'm not sure I really want the hyper surveillance state.No.
That said, I don't see any controversial issue if private entities (say the Downtown Council) installed a whole slew of cameras on buildings in areas that have had problems. I'm not even sure it would be that expensive.

I guess I just interpret those charts differently. Certainly looks like a significant spike since 2014, and from what I hear those categories are on track to be up again in 2017. The "I'm not concerned because things used to be worse" argument falls pretty flat with me. I certainly wouldn'...
