Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

Many of MVTA's local routes have really low ridership. They went on a big local service expansion since the pandemic hit, and it is not surprising that some of those routes have been curtailed. As for the other opt-outs, Maple Grove and Plymouth never had their own local service (although Maple Grov...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Do you have a source for information on this project? Google was not helpful.
It was a part of this study:
https://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/proje ... mlake-slp/

There's also a third segment, which would add an interchange at Bunker Lake Blvd.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

93rd will be part of a reconstruction that will include converting the interchange at CR 10 to a diamond. 87th will get an underpass and 85th/89th will get right-in/out only turns. 93rd will more or less be a diamond interchange. This project will allow the addition of multi-use paths from 81st to 9...

Southtown likely to demolish the Herbergers and Toys R Us buildings. No redevelopment in place, but city is exploring TIF opportunities.

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

My guess is that there's a larger decrease on 4/6/17 compared to the 54. 54 has a lot of airport workers compared to the 4, 6, and 17 that serve a lot of downtown workers. 6 and 17 used to run every 3-5 mins at peak but are now down to 10-15. Also the 54 got the Maplewood Mall extension sometime aft...

Re: Purple Line BRT (Rush Line Corridor)

MT has barely invested in coverage, and in a lot of cases it's actually contracted over the years. 20+ years ago the White Bear Lake area was served with several local and express routes to downtown St. Paul.

Re: Purple Line BRT (Rush Line Corridor)

I more or less agree, but the big challenge then becomes getting local funding together to build out the line. Might not be so difficult as the Purple Line will be piggybacking quite a bit on the G & H line construction, and of course the Maplewood Mall Transit Center already exists. The dedicat...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings

I'm actually surprised their doing and I don't know why cause on paper it sounds like the freight railroad equivalent of TOD, but I've never heard of any railroad building spurs to industrial areas they own and presumably renting it out to tenets. Operations that require freight rail access are hig...

I seem to recall at one point in time there was a concept of a trail underpass below 101 to shorten that loop.

Having worked at Metro Transit for a couple years a decade ago and being close to some folks in Service Development, I can't help but notice the stop consolidation and better bus route stuff is coinciding with several recent retirements of an old guard of route planners, and subsequent rise in the ...

Extending 8th Ave between 3rd St and 5th St would be a good way to keep the access between North Loop and Oak Lake Ave.

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

TSP was installed quite a while ago on Central Ave, but it seems that it was turned off at some point. These stop cuts are long overdue. 4th, 6th, 18th, and 19th are all maybe 300 feet or so from the adjacent stop. 28th, 30th, and 34th don't have a paired SB stop, and 36th is adjacent to the railroa...

Re: Denver

For a weekend trip there's probably better destinations, but Denver would probably beat anything in the Midwest as a car-free vacation outside of Chicago. The Denver Art Museum and Meow Wolf were pretty cool, and the State Capitol has a dome that's open to the public. There's some hiking in Boulder ...

Re: Purple Line BRT (Rush Line Corridor)

Phalen is a good corridor to get to the greater East Side faster. The density isn't really there, but hopefully some TOD around the station areas helps. I do like White Bear over the rail corridor north of Maryland. The population is closer to White Bear and redevelopment in the Hillcrest area would...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

Pre-pandemic they were very peak focused so redeploying resources to local routes likely still amounts to a service cut. Given that local ridership has recovered faster than the peak/downtown oriented ridership it wasn't a bad idea. The other opt-out agencies (Maple Grove, Plymouth, Southwest) are s...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

MVTA has massively expanded local service during the pandemic so I'm not surprised their pulling back. They've basically taken a "throw everything at the wall" approach and are probably now trying to focus on certain routes.
