Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

A hybrid solution to save Route 70 service - eliminate the 84 entirely, and put those service hours into keeping the Route 70 running all day. Instead of terminating at Ford/Cleveland, the Route 70 would absorb that tail end of Route 84 that serves St. Paul Ave down to the Shepard/Davern area (i.e....

Re: Sunday Liquor Sales and other Beer/Liquor Legislation

Conference Committee still necessary, no? I don't think the differences between the House bill are too major though. I'm not clear on this either. Popular consensus seems to be that the two bills call for (slightly) different opening times. If you're the author of the Senate bill though, why not ju...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

The new ones seem to work better for me personally, but I don't ride the bus often enough to have a good sample size. But they seem to get a read faster than the old ones. I used to have to hold my wallet against the reader as I walked into the bus and now as soon as I put my wallet there it beeps ...

Re: Litmus test for whether you're a terrible person or not

My favorite are the people who take advantage of the fact that the person with the green light is waiting to enter the intersection until space is available, by turning right on red into the space as soon as it opens up.

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)

The California model where laws passed by initiative can't be amended without another referendum is clearly flawed, but there could be value in an initiative process that does not bind the legislature's hands, as a way to bypass gridlock and/or apathy in the legislature. If a law passed by initiativ...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Finally, I'll respond to the unwritten subtext of "what about that smart guy?" Basically, you have little to no idea what you're talking about. If you had any interest at all in cost effective rail operations in America, rather than just trying to score cheap points, you'd have at least a...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

They also use DMUs which are illegal in America which is a whole other can of worms. The $20 or so per subsidy ride is just outrageous, I don't know what do about that. The capital expense is pretty much a sunk cost that we can't get back (except maybe a few million in the train sets). So is there ...

Thune claimed this is the developer's fault for choosing to build condos, rather than smaller apartment units like the neighboring buildings, even though supposedly the building footprint is dictated by the parking (the neighboring apartment buildings provide little parking). So is Thune saying he'd...

Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)

Likewise, when waiting at a light before pulling into Union Depot station, the train announces that this is the last stop and that everyone should exit, which sometimes confuses people who wonder why the doors won't open. It also displays "Next: Central" when heading toward Union Depot.

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

At this point, it frequently seems like there is no way that BLM can behave that doesn't immediately provide some source of profound disappointment for white America. Hardly surprising that the general reaction from the movement, then, seems to be "too bad". They could protest in a way th...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Any idea how much it would save to defer 21st St Station?
Hardly anything. And it would impact the connectivity to certain disadvantaged communities.
Only if route 2 actually gets extended to 21st station, which is ranked as low priority in the Service Improvement Plan.

The Straßenbahn in that picture looks quite a bit like what we'd call a light rail vehicle. Are the actual vehicles being discussed for Minneapolis closer to that or to what is used in Portland, etc.? From http://www.midtowncommunityworks.org/documents/StreetcarFinalReport.pdf : "Although there...

Re: "A Line" Snelling Avenue Arterial Bus

It's an upgrade to the 84, which follows the same route. Minneapolis and Saint Paul are not zero-width points. There are other lines that serve the downtowns; this is not one of them. To go between Roseville and either downtown you can transfer to the Green Line at Snelling (though a bus to downtown...

I didn't mean that as a complaint against Southwest -- at least the St Louis Park and Hopkins portions seem like they'd be useful, and we'll see what happens in Eden Prairie. I just meant that if doing Southwest is an option, then that means we weren't exactly scraping the bottom of the funding barr...

Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)

The green line barely squeaked in under finding limits as is, where were we gonna find piles of money for grade separation, even at only a few places. Sure it'd be faster grade separated, but I've never seen that idea stated along with any idea how to pay for it. I was mainly responding to the noti...
