Re: Northern Lights Express

Man, if you were going to extend to Biwabik, Ely is so tantalizingly close that it would be hard not to imagine extending it there as well.

(As someone who used to work intermittently at the underground lab in Soudan, it would have been amazing to have had a rail option to get to the area.)

Re: RiverNorth Broadway

If we put an LRT Station at Broadway/Washington, can we shift the Lyndale Station to Fremont Station then for better connections with the D Line?

Re: Fantasy maps

The only reason I would oppose capping 94 anywhere between 394 and 694 is because it could make it harder to argue for full freeway removal of that stretch in the future. But I like this concept - and honestly, wouldn't be hard to integrate it with a Washington/Lyndale "grand boulevard" co...

Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT

I still hold out hope that the 2027 estimate was an intentional over-estimate, so that they can wow everyone when they come in under. Is it possible to just visually assess the tunnel progress by measuring the amount of completed segments? They have to work it linearly, right?

My 4-year-old thinks it looks like a nativity scene when displayed vertically. Just slap a manger inside the light blue and you're done :)

Re: Minnesota State Flag and Seal Redeisgn

Minnesota panel selects final state flag design I'm going to let this sit with me for awhile before I come to a conclusion, but it does strike me as odd that the commission voted down the Starflake design, presumably because "star on blue field" was too simplistic, and we ended up with &q...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

Did they mention at all what cost savings that might entail? That's quite a lot of bridge structure that would no longer be needed, even if there is some roadway reconfiguration costs that get added back in.

Re: Minnesota State Flag and Seal Redeisgn

If you'd told me a week ago that F29 wouldn't be the final deisgn selected, I wouldn't have been too surprised, but if you'd told me it would finish *last* out of the 6 finalists, I would have been shocked.

Down to three: Panel puts off final Minnesota flag decisions

"F29" will now join "3C" as another mournful alphanumeric byword of what could have been.

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

Honestly though we could have had aBRT in 2017, it will be a massive waste of we choose a bus.
This is fine as a retrospective analysis, but to use this as an argument that we must move forward with rail is the definition of the sunk-cost fallacy.

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

I don't think the removal of the WB 62 to SB 5 is actually all that impactful in practice, but I imagine it will cause quite a bit of uproar for perceived loss of convenience. It really only affects people heading to the airport, and it's pretty straightforward to just switch over to 494 for that tr...

I imagine the current work is simply to clear the site. Any actual new construction would have to go through all the usual approval processes I assume, which we'd have visibility to.

This might be totally ridiculous, but is the Basset Creek Station area at all amenable to a stadium-centric development? It might be too narrow and probably lacking in parking potential, but would have good transit and okay freeway access.

Yep, I spoiled my wife on the fact that the Minneapolis woman would make it to the final round because I recognized Gold Medal Park in the background of one of the promos, and thus knew that she would get a hometown visit.

Wonder if some lesser parks like Valleyfair may be sold to reduce debt. Otherwise we might eventually have Six Flags Valleyfair. You obviously have a much better understanding of the industry than me, but when you say "may be sold", do you mean sold to another operator, or the land sold /...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I'd argue that the freeway capacity is only "badly needed" because of the vast amounts of poorly-planned, car-centric sprawl that extends for miles up towards Bethel / St Francis. As a counterexample, Highway 3 in Dakota County fills the same road hierarchy "niche" that Highway 6...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

'Future of transportation': Celebration marks the start of $195M rebuild of Hwy. 65 in Blaine I think this quote may be a bit of an exaggeration for what will effectively be a freeway with sidewalks and a bike trail. "This is a big deal," said Rep. Frank Hornstein, DFL-Minneapolis. "...
