Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)
Despite what we've seen in some preliminary renderings, I do not think streetcar tracks will be placed in the current auto traffic lanes, in the 3-lane configuration with center turn lane. Throughout winter, parked cars tend to move further away from the curb due to snowbank accumulation. This past...

Re: Alatus St. Anthony Tower (Washburn-McReavy Site)
4. This is actually in the Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood. I'm sure we're all eager to hear how they react to the tower and rezoning request. MHNA is a lot less anti-development than they're stereotyped to be; given this is in an area of existing density and doesn't destroy historic buildings, I doubt i...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transamerica_PyramidI really don't know of many 60's icons that we lavish praise on.
(construction started in 69, but design was earlier)

Does this mean that funeral home is finally going away? Because that I can really get behind.

Re: Northern Lights Express
There's a fair bit of business (and even commuter) travel between Duluth and MSP. Running this at high speed speed means it's competitive with air travel, and probably bests it when you take security into consideration.

Re: Midtown Corridor
You could probably do a double-line from West Lake to Uptown without having to later shut it down to build eastward, but the real problem is that the amount of money we'd spend on it would still be more than is realistic without state or federal help. Look at how much trouble MTC has been having get...

Re: Gentrification
Honestly, if we're just going by smells outside I say every building should be a bakery. ;) I think people are just worried that when Nicollet continues to improve, a lot of the restaurants they like will be pushed out to somewhere else. I don't want everything to stay the same forever (far from it ...

Re: Gentrification
Excellent straw man.Cake shops are for the cake-eaters in Edina. We city folk like our rough bread and barley soup. Urban is gritty, you know - we don't want to gentrify.

Re: Stucco (Portland Cement) Houses
Found this chart while doing some research today. The author of the study in the 30s doesn't really have an explanation for why MSP has so many stucco houses, just notes it as a curiosity.

Re: Gentrification
I don't think anyone hate cake shops, they're just more the sort of thing you'd expect at 50th and France than Nicollet and 25th.

Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)
I was sitting in a Green Line train at Stadium Village that seemed to be stuck somehow. They got it moving after maybe 15 minutes, but it'll be a big delay down the line The actual ride from there to Snelling was alright, only had to stop at lights twice. The surprising one to me was Cromwell, where...

Re: Pedestrian Safety and Infrastructure Improvements
Those top 6 are mostly because their downtown area is so damn big and the transit has been perfected since the 1930's or so Don't forget we had pretty good transit in the 30's... Those cities had better transit in the 30s than they do now, so it's sort of a wash: http://www.brooklynrail.net/images/...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
If I remember, the study for the Midtown corridor was suggesting a travel time from West Lake to Midtown station of about 12 minutes, with eight new stops (Calhoun Beach, Hennepin, Lyndale, Nicollet, I35, 5th, Chicago, and Bloomington). From Uptown to the SWLRT on that thing would be very quick. edi...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Even if someday there is pressure to have a line directly from Uptown to downtown, why would the logical move be to tunnel and reroute the SW? It's already grade-separated for most of its route. It'd be far more cost-effective to look into interlining whatever is built on the Greenway with this, or ...

Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)
Actually I think it can be helpful if channeled the right way. I'm sure Metro Transit would like to fix it, and I'm sure we have the technical capabilities, but do we have the political will? Do we have the political capital to ensure that a $1 billion train is not encumbered by signal timing that ...

Re: Green Line (Central Corridor LRT)
I just don't understand the point of us constantly harping on the signals issue right now; it isn't as though MT doesn't know about it, and is trying to fix it. When they've had some time to get it right, then we can make more reasonable judgments.
