Re: The Commons - Downtown East Park

Opportunity cost. Money from a finite pool spent on this is money that cannot be spent on something else more useful to us as a society.
Except that's not how public spending works, where paying for project A has one set of supporters and paying for project B has another.

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

They both exist. In my original post about the baby boomers, I linked to an article featuring interviews with developers, who were pretty candid in stating that part of why they don't build condos is because a lot of folks looking to live in the city own property elsewhere and are looking for a mor...

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

Just want to note here that this is an often-believed untruth. We have plenty of money to do whatever we want. Politically, we just choose not to. This is a bit of a distinction without a difference. The money only exists if there are the votes to raise and spend it. So, yeah, what you said is 100%...

the high-income households who are actively looking to pay a premium for excluding minorities and poor people from their neighborhood. Do these people exist? Or are they like the baby boomers who have house in Maple Grove and a one-bedroom downtown? I'm not super convinced that concentration of pov...

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

How is building housing for low-income people in neighborhoods they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford "terrible" for those people? That part isn't. This part is: as a way to permanently ward off development that's catered to wealthy people NIEBNA isn't going to turn into a ghetto if yo...

Re: U of M transitway bicycle usage?

Does anyone have an idea of how much the transitway between the campuses is used for bicycling? Are there other routes that students prefer to avoid the buses or are the bus drivers generally quite courteous? Thanks, At least when I'm there on weekends, I concur that there are more bikes than anyon...

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

My solution was to have the government intervene and build more housing for low-income families in the neighborhood, as a way to permanently ward off development that's catered to wealthy people who are willing to pay premiums if it means not having to see non-White people, disabled people and so o...

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

The thing that harms affordable housing supply the most isn't speculative luxury development. It is incumbent landowners who value old buildings for old building's sake and community input over facing the actual needs of society. It is a great sickness that affects Europe and North America. I would...

In truth, a massive influx of wealthy older folks eager to flex their disposable incomes would do nothing to offset demand coming from younger people with a radicall...

SOME people are complaining about that but more people seem to be complaining about disturbing "pristine" parkland. I don't know, but man, that makes not sense. What "makes not sense?" My claim about complaints or the complaints themselves? Because I totally agree, the "pri...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

When I first started going to Gardner (probably 1998?), their business was very much geared towards serving commercial clients and contractors as opposed to regular retail customers. I suspect that business was gutted by Home Depot, and they were unable to pivot to the type of high-customer service...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

There was an attempt a few years ago to get the building and Cuzzy's sold for a condo development that never got too far. I think they have been wanting out now for a few years and hoping to find a buyer then close. Now how many years later I think they are just looking to sell the building and get...

Re: The Commons - Downtown East Park

Not exactly gridlock, is it? It was closed this weekend, but it was not completely closed during rush hour this morning. I think two lanes were open, and there actually was some stacking going on of cars trying to get through. I turned right on 3rd instead of trying to take a lane in the mess, as t...

Gardner Hardware has closed after 130 years:

My attempts to keep it open by occasionally purchasing 18 cents worth of screws have failed. It's a shame.

However the east tower north section has mounds of dirt which from where I was I could not tell if that was from work on the east tower or if they have started ground work for the new Radisson Red. I'm an amateur observer, but I thought it looked like they had started work on the Red when I went by...

Looks like the senior building on the east end will be called Abiitan. http://www.abiitan.org/ I couldn't quite make sense of the renderings on the display in Crystal Court last week (or whenever that was), some of which are at that link. It looked like there will be a diagonal "street" o...
