It will be easy to tear down if somebody wants to build higher in the future.

Re: Nicollet Mall
It is clearly a downgrade from what was there before. Doing nothing would have been better. The mall has become less attractive with each update.Am I the only one who thinks this lacks the punch of a $50M+ project? It's basically a glorified bus route

Re: Latest Census Estimates and Met Council Projections
In theory, the first areas to be impacted by the die off of the baby boomers would be retirement areas, because that will be where most of them are when they die, but those are also areas that have had high immigration. One element of immigration that doesn't get talked about much is the fact that L...

I emailed Keith Ellison. I was surprised he wasn't a cosponsor.

Re: Cannabis Law Reform
The Marijuana Justice Act has been introduced in Congress to repeal federal marijuana prohibition. It has six cosponsors in the senate and 37 in the house. Not a single Minnesotan among them. Our representatives are cowards, we are supposed to be a progressive state.

Thinking that open boarders is a good idea is a knee jerk reaction to anti-immigrant racism. On its own merits it probably isn't a good idea. It would be a disaster for the working class.
There is a lot of real estate in the middle ground between open boarders and kick everybody out.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Once this line is built it will be the rail line for this slice of the metro for centuries (probably). That means that the urban parts of south west Minneapolis will likely never be served by a Downtown rail line if this project goes through. This line is a mistake of a historic magnitude. It was de...

Re: Savannah
My parents live in Savannah so I visit it from time to time. It has a romance to it that Minneapolis is too uptight and compulsive to pull off. It is one of the most beautiful cities in North America, but the summers are fierce. You will never complain about humidity in Minneapolis again after a Jul...

The 94/35W trench south of downtown was part of the densest census tracts in Minneapolis in 1950 so it seems plausible.

Re: Smaller Scale "Missing Middle" Multi-Family Development
As recently as the late '80s you could still buy HUD homes in the city for a dollar, I have a friend who bought one in the Wedge. I think that is a pretty sure sign of weak demand.

Re: Zoning, building codes, enforcement in the courts
I don't think it will be political suicide. I think a lot of people in the neighborhoods will realize they can make money off it. Financing one of these conversions will be really easy. The other element is that the majority of Minneapolis residents are renters. The arguments about keeping rents un...

Re: Crime
I wouldn't say that it is defending seediness per se. Minneapolis is an obsessively orderly place, probably more so than any other big city in the country. Making it even more orderly isn't going to help a district that is centered around fun. It may actually be part of the problem.

Re: Crime
Usually when a restaurant space is empty for years it means that either the rent is too high or the inner workings of the space are broken in a way that prevents the restaurant from operating properly or profitably. There are spots that are restaurant graveyards all throughout the metro. There are m...

Re: City Club Apartments - 1000 Marquette Ave (Handicraft Building)
Correct, they reviewed it and rejected it. Which is more a reflection of the toothlessness of our historic protection laws. They seem to be focused on noteworthy events or connections to important figures and miss the fact that there are so few old commercial buildings left downtown that they shoul...

Re: Crime
Bottom line: who cares if Hennepin 'used to be worse'? There are people with legitimate points of view that think its a problem now, they should be believed and listened to, not dismissed. Because if we listen to those people the end result will be that Minneapolis will be a Disneyfied urban theme ...

Re: Crime
Harassment is something we could change the legal definition of and make it possible to enforce. But that might make the lives of some others in power more difficult so we'll keep debating about spitting instead. In practice, making harassment a crime will just give the police the green light to ha...

An atrocity. This city never learns. It is stuff like this that makes people hate development.
