Re: Urban/Suburban Lifestyle

So you hereby declare that each and every person in the suburbs has something wrong with them, and you base this conclusion on some customers you observed at a strip-mall bar?

Re: Vikings Stadium

There are many (myself included) who have the desire to attend major sporting events but lack the cash. For us, the MLS is a great alternative. Here are the average ticket prices: NFL - $113 NHL - $57 NBA - $48 MLB - $27 MLS - $26 http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2012/05/11/u-s-pro-sports-attendance-ti...

Re: Vikings Stadium

Thanks Jfuss! At some point I'm sure I'll have the urge to submit a comment. Regarding the MLS, I think it could fly here. The Minnesota Kicks drew 24,000 folks a match over the course of 6 seasons back in the 70s, when there were a million fewer people living in the metro than there are now. And fr...

Re: Vikings Stadium

More news, this time regarding soccer. The Vikings are ensuring that the stadium will accommodate professional/international soccer. And once the stadium development process advances a bit, they promise to explore investment in an MLS team. They've indicated this in the past, but it's nice to hear '...

Re: Vikings Stadium

More info about HKS from the Strib: "A stadium rendering won't be publicly unveiled until January, at the earliest. Before then, HKS plans to travel the state to talk with Minnesotans and gather perspective on what they want to see. The first meeting is set for Oct. 15 at Minneapolis City Hall....

This story sheds a bit more light on today's choice than the Strib story did:

Re: Vikings Stadium

Agreed. I like the way Lucas Oil functions, but I don't like the way it looks. Also, it's interesting that even after HKS is named, Bagley still says it's "premature to say whether the stadium will have a retractable roof". That would seem to indicate that any designs that may exist at thi...

Re: Vikings Stadium

The candidates were required to submit preliminary concepts, and there's a chance that some of those concepts will be revealed when the architect is named. But the real work hasn't really begun yet. My understanding is that there won't be a final design for several months.

Re: Vikings Stadium

Zygi Wilf has built tens of thousands of homes and over a hundred malls and commercial properties. He's likely got more experience entertaining bids from architects than any NFL owner ever. The point of the delay is just to buy him more time to milk these bidders for all their worth.

Re: Vikings Stadium

Ted Mondale says "all renderings and plans will probably be presented when a winner is selected, perhaps as early as the authority's Sept. 14 meeting." So maybe that means we'll get to see what was considered and rejected at the same time they announce the winning bid. Here's a story on to...

Re: Vikings Stadium

For what it's worth, this morning Sid Hartman speculated the HKS, designer of Cowboys Stadium and Lucas Oil Stadium, is the favorite. Sid is well connected but I'm not sure if he's a good prognosticator. We'll see what happens.

Re: What will it take to develop DTE?

We know that the stadium will have an impressive and inviting west entry. It'll have a Vikings Hall of Fame to draw tourists (not an earth-shattering addition but still a plus). There will be a plaza designed to function independently of Vikings events. There will be an upgraded transit station serv...

Re: Vikings Stadium

Here's a bit of news regarding the Strib. Taking on new tennants and announcing you're in "no hurry" to sell might just be a negotiating ploy, but count me among those who think their headquarters will still be there when the stadium dust settles. http://www.minnpost.com/braublog/2012/08/v...

Populous is probably the front-running architect, right? Maybe we'll end up with something along these lines: http://populous.com/project/sochi-2014/

Re: Vikings Stadium

Interesting. They also want preliminary designs to "include an operable roof or other element to allow for open air events". So their choice of architect will hinge at least partially on how the question of retractability is addressed. Also they want to "optimize suite distribution to...

Re: Vikings Stadium

The Vikings released that stadium plan map on the day they announced a deal with Minneapolis to build on the dome site. At the time they were concerned about losing the support of all the folks who were geeked about Arden Hills and it's massive parking lots. So they told their illustrator to use the...
