Re: Presidential Election 2016

This is stolen from a friend who is far more eloquent than I (on a different forum): Are you serious? Democrats ignored/excluded/offended blue collar middle class whites more than Republicans? Free trade isn't an idea espoused by Democrats. Union busting isn't a Democratic value. Cutting taxes for ...

Re: Presidential Election 2016

The problem with your argument is that Hillary's favorables were quite high at the outset. Look at the numbers from before around March of last year here: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/clinton_favorableunfavorable-1131.html#polls Her nonsense "baggage" gets traction in no ...

Re: Minneapolis Armory

For one, it helps mitigate traffic on 5th St. Can you imagine the back up this is going to cause? The exits/entrances are historically on Portland and Fifth Ave, because it made sense. Now, keeping an entrance on 5th St makes even LESS sense. To add to this, almost everything we have heard up until...

Re: Theater Garage Marquee Apartments - (Franklin & Lyndale)

Presumably, the real estate folks have done their assessment of demand for retail space along Lyndale, and this was their best take on what made sense. I think it's still true that rented retail space is more valuable than rented apartment space, so if they thought the retail would rent, they would...

Ok, drawings quickly reviewed. Elevating active uses above grade and having parking at grade is horse sh1t. This is garbage.

Re: Minneapolis Armory

Unless I'm viewing the renderings incorrectly, it appears that Swervo is planning to brick in all the existing windows on the east and west sides and then build an addition on the east side that covers a portion of the historic facade and makes little attempt to fit with the WPA style. How this fli...

Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project

Those comments. Wow. People need to do a little research on this project.
This is (further) evidence that we are in a very small niche of public consciousness as urbanists/people that care about cities/streets/sidewalks/architecture/design.

The "sneak preview" square footages listed are increased versus the earlier ordinance which had stricter (smaller) square footages/limitations.

Re: Lyndale Ave & 54th Street area

I would guess that have some financing or environmental issues to contend with. That's what I'm getting at...environmental issues should have been understood a LOOOOOONG time ago; I think the issues are financing related which makes sense because this project makes very poor use of the possibilitie...

Re: Lyndale Ave & 54th Street area

Does anyone know off the top of their head what development agreements with the city say about the limits regarding "uninterrupted periods of work" that *should* be governing this kind of thing?

Re: Lyndale Ave & 54th Street area

Have anyone been by the Beeks Pizza project lately? I know nothing about it but about 2 months ago they drove some piles very haphazardly and then made a half-hearted attempt to pour some footings and to build 1/3 of a concrete block wall - since that little flurry, nothing has happened on the site....

Re: Ritz Residences - 365 Nicollet Mall (334' - 30 stories)

10:1 seems generous. Do we know of a single project in Minnesota that's used this technology? I don't have a lot of money to lose in case of some very sustainably-minded developer who was/is willing to incur costs that others are not typical in our market and then not talk about those improvements ...

That's cool technology, but does anyone know if they are putting it on the Ritz?
I'm taking odds on this one if anyone is interested

10/1 that they are not using thermally broken forms for balconies at the Ritz.

I've noticed that after the evening of the boards down, they please this green tubing and them. And you know what that is? It almost looks like they put pipes down before they put the concrete down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk It's probably an "active" drain system because the grou...

Re: Ritz Residences - 365 Nicollet Mall (334' - 30 stories)

I've seen these used in Europe. I'd be stunned if this project was planning on using them. BINGO! I am aware of how to create a thermal break. However, until these are required by code, you aren't likely to see them until "the market" demands them (read: probably never). I'm all for them ...

Re: Harriet Avenue Apartments - (2900 block of Harriet/Grand)

Some excavators actually LIKE to dig during the winter because they feel the ground holds less liquid water. Every soil condition/ground water level is different obviously. I'm no expert on eathrwork but it's what I've been told in meetings. Also, if you think about the timeline of construction - do...

Every building with post-tensioned concrete floors with balconies has the same problem whether they try to do something architecturally interesting or they are simple rectangles a la Lat 45 et al.

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium Construction Updates

Anyway, I don't think anybody is questioning the need for security features. The question being asked is, "Why does it have to look so half-assed, poorly executed, and generally janky?" The chain link fencing, for example, is clearly not going to prevent a truck bomb, or even going to pre...
