Re: Dorothy Day Center

Not sure why they would have to dig down into bedrock so far? I can't see the place needing a basement to function?
There's a fairly substantial grade along 5th St so perhaps it's to level the whole plot with the lowest point at 5th, 6th, & Main Streets.

Re: Dorothy Day Center

As noted in the General St Paul thread, they've broken ground. I drive by the site every day and have noticed that they're having to remove a lot of bedrock. At first I thought it was concrete from prior structures but the piles just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

What's going on at the parcel bounded by Main, 35E and the freeway rams off Old 6th? Lots of dirt being turned.
The new Dorothy Day Center:

They're really having to hammer through a lot of bedrock!

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

Very true. Safety is directly related to the concentration of the pollutants at each distance from their source and your location relative to it, as well as the number of repeated exposures. Which, is why in my original post I asked if there are any studies showing these concentration levels emanati...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

I'm no chemical engineer and really don't know what I'm talking about but I'd assume that just because you can't see and smell something doesn't mean there's nothing there (think carbon monoxide). The emissions certainly are not 100% water vapor (ie. steam). And, even if the average daily emissions ...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

A HERC commentary in the Southwest Journal a couple days ago: http://www.southwestjournal.com/voices-feed/minneapolis-burning It'd be interesting to see a visual depiction on a map of the estimated concentration of pollutants as you move further away from HERC. One would think that Northeast would b...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

By "infill station", you guys are referring to a Nice Ride infill station, right? Orange Line infill station seems like it might be out of scope for this particular meeting (though it would probably be good to bring it up and keep the pressure on). The nearest Nice Ride station is at 36th ...

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News

Don't know about the numbers, but it's an attractive stop for those getting off to shop or eat in Uptown, because you don't have to cross at Lagoon, which is both dangerous and uncomfortable on the west side of the intersection. Buses and cars really like to pressure you and often have limited visi...

The New Hope / Crystal boundary is a mess too. They should get together, along with Robbinsdale. There is an island of Crystal in New Hope. Another locally owned bookstore bites the dust. Nicollet Bookstore has closed at 4237 Nicollet Ave: http://www.southwestjournal.com/news/biz-buzzes/nicollet-bookstore-closes-after-two-decades I hate to admit that I'm part of the problem by reading electronic books. But in reality, there's unfortunat...

I know someone posted a link to a Portland Tower construction cam somewhere but I can't find it in either this thread or the "Construction Webcams" thread. Driving west on 94 yesterday I spotted a second crane in the same area.

I like those block shiny areas. From the ground it will look like there are chunks of the building missing. Dare I say iconic?
I'd have to agree. That's one of my favorite aspects of the design. Certainly has more of an "iconic" feel than United's Nicollet Hotel Block proposal.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

People wouldn't have to walk 2 blocks to transfer IF the Nicollet line is extended from 494 and Nicollet to 494 and American. Then riders can transfer station to station. Even the pie in the sky streetcar plans don't have it going that far south. I have a feeling that we'll never see streetcar sout...
