Re: 365 Nicollet - (Opus Ritz block)

Re: TCF Bank Building Redevelopment

..Chicago is tall because of the lake. NYC is tall because it's an island. We don't have those barriers. You know that's a simplistic reason. Because you can't make that argument for LA, Dallas, Houston, Philly, etc... I think it has something to do with the fact that, say, NYC and CHI have many ti...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

For me, I liked the animated LED facade of the original (or rather the revised original). It was a great idea even though it too was just conceptual.

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

I would like to know how this new design - though conceptual - even remotely addresses this requirement by the city: A mixed use tower with at least 30 stories to include a hotel, residential, commercial and/or office uses with a façade, a portion of which includes a mullion pattern reflecting the t...

Friendships and the Built Environment

I just ran a cross this interesting article on Vox. It deals with how our current housing choices - which are a relatively recent social construct - can interfere with the idea of how we make and sustain adult friendships. http://www.vox.com/2015/10/28/9622920/housing-adult-friendship The author als...

If nothing else, some people seem to like it, so your "objective" opinion that it's mediocre is objectively wrong. Because the entire field of architectural criticism is garbage! Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk Ergo, every field of criticism in every human endeavor is garbage? Sorry,...

"Minny" has been very widely used in the airline industry for decades, especially among Delta and former NWA employees. And with thousands of pilots and flight attendants living here word gets around.

Also given that many of the renderings had a "glow" around the entire building, I am not sure they were ever planning on lighting the top.
Yes, it was supposed to be back-lit frosted glass. See note #1 below:

I was hanging out at the new Spyhouse with the architect (seated in the foreground with the baseball cap). Really nice space. Sort of a Viennese Secessionist vibe to the design. Neat light fixtures and a carefully crafted maple herringbone & tin ceiling. Expensive details throughout. http://i674...

Re: 100 Hennepin Avenue S

Looking more closely at the townhouse plans -- excepting the two end units, which are larger -- these units really only have one functional bedroom. The 'bonus space' on the top floor doesn't have a door, so is open to the rest of the unit. If these are going to be condos then there is plenty of sp...

Re: 315 Nicollet - (Opus Ritz block)

In the spirit of taxing what society finds undesirable, perhaps a property tax penalty is levied against empty storefronts on a sliding scale related to the amount of time they sit empty. Basically countering the tax write-offs. (How's that for adding another layer of complexity :) )

That fly-through animation is ludicrous. They show the pivoting doors as though someone - even without a ticket - will be able to just saunter in. Where are the security bollards? Where are the ticketing machines?
