Will the new fire station be built before the old one is torn down, much like the Larking managed the Wells Fargo branch?

Re: St. Olaf Church Affordable Housing - 800 3rd Ave S & 825 2nd Ave S

In the original version, about 120 units were planned for a renovation and expansion of the brick building to the south of St. Olaf, with additional units in a new building on the current parking lot. If that’s still true, the 20-story building site would be somewhat less packed.

And the new O'Shaughnessy Distillery is due to open near Surly within the next couple of months. It's a good things there's an LRT station nearby!

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

Is there a racial aspect to this issue? Is the course heavily used by people of color? I've seen lots of Save the Hiawatha Course signs near the golf course itself, but given the neighborhood, my assumption would be that these would be nearly all white households.

Re: RBC Gateway (Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 519'

(I agree this is O/T at this point) Counterpoint - farmers markets are not Costcos and nobody shops at a farmers market like they do regular suburban grocery stores. Like many other city amenities, visitors are envisioned to be from the dense neighborhoods surrounding it or are visitors who will ha...

Re: RBC Gateway (Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 519'

This isn't really an RBC Gateway topic anymore, is it? That said, the idea of a year-round, indoor marketplace at the central PO is enticing. I've sometimes thought that the best place to start would be in the southernmost, smaller structure, since this might be compatible with downsized operations ...

Re: Elliot Park

A couple of comments on this one: --The Elliot Park neighborhood's biggest disadvantage vis-a-vis other downtown neighborhoods is the bleakness of the blocks between it and the downtown core. It feels more apart than it really is. Also, the neighborhood is relatively poor and feels it. As those blea...

Re: Lake and Fremont - 15 stories

I was on the South Uptown neighborhood call last night where the developers presented their plans for this building. It went about as expected with some supporting the height and others saying it doesn't fit the neighborhood. Also concerns about the rooftop party deck and what the exterior would lo...

Wilderness Inquiry, a great non-profit organization, is headquartered in the one-story buildings on the west side of the site. Is there any word on what will happen to them? It looks like they were the main seller so at a minimum, they have a nice cash infusion here. Thanks for the update, HKM. I'm...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map

Both of these buildings are handsome artifacts of their period. We’ve lost the very best from this time, but one or both of these could be worth saving if they are handled well. Perhaps either a park or a slender new building could take over the parking lot. I'm with Luigi on this one. Even if thes...

Re: Affordable Housing

There is a thread over in the Anything Goes forum. Thanks for directing me there. Maybe I was stuck by the extremely limited reaction to the Drake Hotel fire, which made me wonder how much avowed urbanists really care about the issue. Do we go bonkers over exterior cladding issues and push the huge...

Happy New Year, everyone! It seems that there is no thread devoted solely to affordable housing. Re: Eleven (Ryan Condo Tower) - 1111 West River Parkway - 41 stories / 550'

The idea of freeway lids keeps popping up on this forum. I understand the desire for connection, but there are still many acres of underutilized land downtown, and there are gaping infrastructure needs everywhere. Juxtaposing the square footage cost of space on top of a freeway cap to these facts, i...
