Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
I'd rather they road diet 84th and put in some protected bike lanes. That "trail" isn't the greatest, the main issues being having to stop at every intersection to push the walk button and guessing if turning traffic will wait for you, and the westbound off-ramp from 494 has a pretty bad b...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings
Valley Park I'm pretty sure is the Shakopee yard. Which is interesting as the Shakopee yard has tons of users right there in town; Rahr, Certainteed, Anchor Glass and KEB just to name a few, not to mention the Savage docks as well. Any additional info about this? The only other thing I heard was lo...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects
You can't just wave your hands and change how our cities have been built for the last 200 years. Using a bicycle as primary transportation in the suburbs isn't feasible. It could have been were our cities built around that idea, but they weren't. It would probably make sense to start taxing residen...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects
How effective is not building a new overpass at Lake Elmo Ave. Or anything the United States does,, going to be at combating climate change in the context of what China and India are putting out. It's going to take some sort of technological revolution, perhaps electric cars combined with industria...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects
Doesn't matter what is "environmentally responsible" or whatever this weeks buzzword is. Seems like outside of the urban bubble most people are clamoring for highway expansion because they don't want to be stuck in traffic or killed at a dangerous intersection, and nothing comes even remo...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
My thoughts on some of these proposals: SW Transit - 494 Prime expansion: Makes sense to me. It's pretty clear from past experiences that local bus routes in that area will get little if any ridership. I wonder how long it would take and how much would it be for me to go from Eden Prairie to Maple G...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings
I don't know how credible the source is, but I read on the Minnesota Railroads Facebook group that Union Pacific wants to abandon the Valley Park and East Minneapolis rail yards. Regarding the Montgomery Subdivision, Union Pacific is using it for railcar storage in addition to the little bit of ship...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Regarding the Normandale Blvd "trail", finally! I've been biking on that buckling and muddy stretch of junk for more than a decade. This has been long overdue. Now they just need to do the "trail" along Old Shakopee. Is the "MN River Greenway/UP Rail overpass" site at N...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects
Not surprising considering highways cost more money but move far more people than transit, bike, and ped projects. To say nothing about most transit being dependent on highways. Consider that there may be a circular relationship between these variables. Adding on to that point: Which is more enviro...

How much travel time could be saved if all the signalized intersections on the route had bus preemption?

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Looks like the first LRT cars for this are being delivered today. Are these cars identical to the previous Green Line cars? On the outside yes. On the inside there's bench seats in the middle section of the train. From a mechanical standpoint I don't know what, if anything, is different from the Ty...

Re: Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville - General Topics
Are you suggesting we grade-separate every crosswalk? Just clarifying what you meant by that. It's almost like you can make something walkable without hurting people in cars if you can build pedestrian overpasses and multi-use trails to keep motorized and non-motorized traffic separate.

Re: Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville - General Topics
When suburbs say they want walkable it usually means "we'll build wide sidewalks and some fancy trails but we're going to keep widening roads because we like our cars and driving fast too much to give that up." I do like the roadway coming off southbound 35W just south of 42 that leads dir...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Again, this is a case where an at-grade rail crossing would make SO MUCH MORE SENSE. BNSF wouldn't allow it, and I don't blame them. Too many possible pedestrians and bikers that will try to beat the train, and these trains go up to 50 miles per hour on that segment. This rail line was built for sp...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
I know that BNSF won't allow it, but it's a silly reason to spend so much money on an overpass (not to mention the ongoing expenses to maintain it, plow snow off of it, etc.). By this logic, we should eliminate all crosswalks at highways, because that traffic is moving faster than 50 mph and is com...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects
I was caught by surprise by the huge construction going on at Highway 101 between Flying Cloud Drive and Pioneer Trail. Lots of trees cut down and tons of dirt being moved, so I looked up what was going on. They're straightening the road, widening it to four lanes plus a trail, and a bridge over the...

Where is this? Looks like St. Louis Park crossing over the BNSF tracks to connect Edgewood Avenue with the North Cedar Lake Trail. This particular segment has fencing along the south side of the tracks so the only way to get across is go up to the north-south Canadian Pacific rail line or go to Lou...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit
I'm sorry, but the notion that the sloped wall on the south side of the Midtown trench is somehow sacrosanct makes a parody of historic preservation. Just because something is old does not give it intrinsic veto power over any subsequent improvement. This is like the supposed "railroad histori...
