Stucco (Portland Cement) Houses
Can any historically-minded people tell me why there are so many stucco houses in Minneapolis? I can't find anything online. I've lived all over the midwest and have never seen so many stucco homes as here. My guess is that it was cheap and it provided insulation before fiberglass. Anyways, as I pre...

Re: Nicollet Mall Project
That looks great. Glad they reduced the curb to almost nothing. Personally, I don't like the look of a variety of materials. Makes it look dated and seems like the materials could wear at different rates.

Re: Nicollet Mall Project
I've only seen the latest pdf on the project website so forgive me if this has already been discussed. Has there been any mention of the concept of "Shared Space" in the redesign discussions? I'd like to see them get rid of the curbs. I know this might be contentious but I really do think ...

Re: Move-MN?
Completely agree. Same goes for their heavily subsidized suburban land use choices. But back to transportation. Maybe we need a UrbanMSP poll on Move-MN. I'm still undecided but honestly don't know that much. While any additional funding would be welcomed, in an ideal world I'd rather that money com...

Re: Move-MN?
I'm just a little confused. For the entire state, $16 million is a drop in the bucket. I know it's not a state project but the midtown greenway cost $36 million.

MoveMN
Who knows about this campaign? Specifically what their proposal is for dedicated ped/bike funding. From the website: Move MN proposes increasing the current sales tax by ¾ cent, applying the sales tax in all seven counties and using a small portion of the tax to fund safe and accessible bike and ped...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)
Can someone remind me about how changes to alignment affects the funding and therefore the time-frame? If the alignment is changed doesn't that set back the projects at least 5 years or more because of the necessary Alternatives Analysis and EISs? While I agree 5-10 years is not a lot in the scheme ...

Re: Snelling BRT/enhanced bus
I also voted for the "Circuit" design although "Glance" was a close second. But I agree the "hop" and "Gust" designs with the high roof line would do little to block out the weather. Snow and ice sliding off the curved roofs would also make the shelters very a...

Parking requirements for affordable housing
Anyone know if there are different parking requirements for affordable/subsidized housing? Or is it the same as market-rate developments?

Re: Does Minneapolis have too many stoplights?
So did the traffic signal upgrade project also include actuated upgrades?! I thought it did but after checking out the website I'm not sure. We need these in the worst way. All anyone needs to do is drive down E 38th St from Hiawatha to Lyndale. It's maddening. Arterials and collector road lights sh...

Re: Hiawatha LRT Trail
Thanks for that link. Was the actual trail constructed during the LRT construction? If so was concrete (vs. asphalt) chosen because of the climate?

Hiawatha LRT Trail
Anyone know of plans to improve the Hiawatha LRT Trail? Just curious. The trail, especially south of Lake is bumpy and intersections are not particularly bike friendly with curb ramps and separated right turn lanes. Painted bike/pedestrian lanes would also be nice.

Re: Co-ops
Seward Coop is amazing! I'm thinking about moving there partly because of the coop. When it comes to produce, Seward Coop often times has a better selection and is cheap than any Cub Foods. Try and find organic kale at cub foods. At the Co-op you can get a huge bunch for about $2-3. Add to that the ...

Re: Hiawatha Traffic Signals
I'm a new resident so I only have a couple months experience with the Hiawatha lights. However, I've sat at 32nd for about a minute after the cars have proceed through the intersection waiting for the light to change. Maybe the sensors on east-west streets are malfunctioning. Also, any idea why flas...

Hiawatha Traffic Signals
What the hell is up with the timing of the traffic lights. The east-west signals stay green way too long, with no cars coming. I know the train interrupts the signaling but I've notice that Hiawatha will get a green light after the gates go down but once the gates go up, 20 seconds later, the...

Re: Brutalism
As stated, I think a lot of brutalist buildings also suffer from neglect, which further detracts from an positive architectural aspects they retain. University of Illinois at Chicago's campus was almost entirely brutalist, however they have renovated some smaller buildings, which now don't look brut...
