Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I'm unconvinced that adding half a dozen at-grade crossings and spending a pile of transit money on new freeway offramps and a bridge for car traffic is an improvement over the original Lyndale option.

Re: Salt Lake City
Wild. I'm assuming it's only at night, when the LRT isn't running? I know the NJ Transit River Line works like that, but that was DMUs being added to an existing freight line, not freight being added to an electrified LRT line.

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Special Northstar trains will be running for the Twins playoff games this week. Seems like a good sign that they're able to do last-minute special service like this again.

Re: HERC - Hennepin Energy Recovery Center
Is it not possible to replace the HERC plant with something that runs on renewable energy (wind, solar, etc.)? Sure - here's an article about just that . As is usually the case, the primary issue is that it'll be very expensive - the city, county, state, or all of them are probably going to have to...

Re: HERC - Hennepin Energy Recovery Center
Which I also haven't heard much about--there are non-garbage ways to produce steam (there are other steam plants downtown) but presumably the electricity for that comes from somewhere? I believe the other downtown steam plants are natural gas-fired (in Minneapolis, at least - the downtown St. Paul ...

Re: Fare-Free Transit
That's a good point. Looked it up, and it appears that they specifically do not provide transfers. Maybe that's part of the study, to see how it affects the crosstown 32 vs the downtown-bound 62?

Re: Fare-Free Transit
In 2019 , Metro Transit took in about 26% of its operating budget in fares. I haven't seen a breakdown on how much it costs to maintain TVMs, etc, but I'm reasonably sure it's not anywhere near $110M a year. Hard to see how losing a quarter of their operating budget wouldn't result in pretty severe...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
TSP was installed quite a while ago on Central Ave, but it seems that it was turned off at some point. These stop cuts are long overdue. 4th, 6th, 18th, and 19th are all maybe 300 feet or so from the adjacent stop. 28th, 30th, and 34th don't have a paired SB stop, and 36th is adjacent to the railro...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Surprise (to me, at least) stop consolidation and TSP coming to the Minneapolis portion of the Rt. 10 in a couple weeks. Looks like it will generally drop stop spacing down to every other block in the areas that currently have a stop every single block. https://twitter.com/h_pan3/status/170632561438...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
Glad to hear it! Honestly an embarrassing article from Janet Moore, who's usually pretty good. Just transparently bad faith to uncritically repeat arguments that removing car traffic from 10th would make it worse to walk on. My bike commute goes through there and I see people get almost hit by cars ...

In a twist no one could have expected, the gambit to avoid the NIMBYs on Lyndale by routing down 10th and Washington has run into NIMBYs on 10th.

Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics
This article from May about the Wayzata Red Cow said that the NE development was next on the list, probably in 2024. I guess demoing now tracks with starting construction in the spring? Can't really blame them for canning the brewery component with the current issues in that market. But the mixed-u...

Three story redevelopment at 201 Lowry. Brewpub on the ground, office on 2nd floor. More dining on 3rd. https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2019/07/02/red-cow-plans-brewpub-in-northeast-minneapolis.html The Little Jack's building is being demolished today. I guess this project might still b...

Seriously. Lots of opportunities open up if someone can crack the code on 4-6 story single-lot developments. I guess this isn't quite a 40' wide standard lot, but it's gotta be easier to assemble a 60' wide site on Hennepin or Central or Nicollet or wherever than a half-block.

Re: Denver
My spouse and I just did a car-free weekend in Denver at the end of July, and definitely didn't run out of stuff to do. The Art Museum and Capitol are right downtown, and the zoo and science museum at City Park are not too bad of a bus ride. We found the RTD transit buses and trains to be reliable, ...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
I wonder how much of the transportation use would have to be retained to prevent issues with federal grants. Leaving a little space open for a theoretical streetcar was apparently good enough for the Gateway block to be redeveloped, would a 100ish-stall public parking component of a redevelopment do...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Metro Transit is increasing Northstar service starting October 2. They'll be adding a third peak direction trip and a reverse trip every weekday, and adjusting the existing trip times to allow the first peak trip, reverse trip, and third peak trip to use the same trainset. There will also be servic...

Re: Better Bus Routes - Metro Transit
If I remember correctly, Route 4 scored the highest (like, even higher than the 10 and 18) on the rubric they were using to select the recent wave of aBRT lines a couple years ago, implying that it would get aBRT'd soon, but they didn't actually confirm it would be next. I'm still holding out hope t...

Mod note: I moved the aBRT posts over to the dedicated thread I created for easier searchability a couple years ago then promptly forgot about.
