Re: Empire Builder
Funny that they're still studying adding Hiawatha trains-- I saw the new trainsets sitting behind the Talgo plant in Milwaukee easy back in April 2011! Also, talk about a no-brainer, the existing Hiawatha trains are packed, even with the strange pricing.

Re: Transit News and Happenings
First time riding the mpls-chi route since the STP stop was added. It's like greyhound-- basically no one uses the second stop.

Not the best view, but boy is she already lording over her low-rise neighbors.

Re: Minneapolis Energy Muncipalization
Right-hand lane of 26th at 5th Ave, 1st Ave between 24th and 25th. Not sure if it was actually two weeks. It was probably the Wednesday or Thursday of the second week.

Re: Minneapolis Energy Muncipalization
You mean disposing of all debris city-wide for free? I think there are quite a few large suburbs whose residents would love if their city provided such a terrible service. No, I mean letting city-owned trees block traffic for close to two weeks. When do you think they'll fix the sidewalks? Probably...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor
So you would propose closing it to through-traffic, but still keeping the parking? I've never thought of that-- how do you envision it?

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)
Look at how horribly the city handled all the trees recently. Imagine if they had been responsible for the power grid? Yeah, no thanks.

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor
I agree that as far as business is concerned, it shouldn't be a big deal to remove parking for the vast majority of them. There probably needs to be a small municipal ramp built along the corridor sometime soon anyways.

Re: LPM Apartments - (1368 LaSalle Avenue)
It's very visible already from so many places. Walking up Nicollet from south of 94 it looks great. Can't wait to see its visual impact when complete!

Re: Elan of Uptown - (2837 Dupont Avenue South)
Ah, sorry, I've never heard of synthetic stucco. You learn something new every day!The stucco would have to have such expansion joints, I don't think it's rough traditional stucco, but a smoother synthetic stucco.

Re: Elan of Uptown - (2837 Dupont Avenue South)
It's concrete board as far as I can tell. Or remarkably homogeneous stucco with channeled expansion joints.
The wood they've put up the last few days is SHARP. Check out that west facade. MmmMmmMmm!

Re: Mystery Washington Avenue Tower - (301 Washington Avenue
If it is indeed residential or hotel, I would think we're looking at full-site enclosed parking with a tower on 1/3 to 1/2 of that rather than two towers or one long tower. That's pretty much the de facto for highrise residential these days everywhere in the US except New York.

Re: Dismantling Downtown Freeways
We're very lucky that here in the Twin Cities most of our urban freeways were built in trenches rather than as viaducts. I do think we have some viaducts that need to go-- most particularly the huge 94 ramps in the North Loop, but we can work with our entrenched freeways without having to get rid of...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks
Btw the Strib story made it sound like Cam Gordon was opposed only to specifying the purchase price now instead of in 2016 or whatever, which is a rationale I can get behind. Is this not true? I haven't had time to look at any of the other media froth on this topic. The PP article linked above has ...

Re: Nicollet Ave/Eat Street
Interesting. Those lots are significantly deeper than most-- the blocks between Pleasant and Nicollet from Franklin down to 40th are some of the widest in the city. If the Pho parcel is indeed also in play, that would make for a pretty big assemblage of land.

Re: Nicollet Ave/Eat Street
This morning there's a survey team at work in both the parking lot for the Pho shop and around the back of the Washburn Center on the NW corner of 25th and Nicollet. A sign of things to come? If someone wants to merge this thread with this one: http://urbanmsp.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=421 , that...
