Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics
Just realizing how weird it is that there's not a single hotel on St. Anthony Main. Especially considering the many wedding venues. I guess there's the Nicollet Island Inn, so there's one. Not a single hotel in Dinkytown either. A few in Stadium Village. The city's pattern of hotels is indeed stran...

Re: Interstate 94
This one is such a no-brainer.*MN-121 removal (proposed to get a similar band-aid soon, should be removed, re-gridded, etc.)
But in defense of Our Streets, 94 is scheduled for work whether they advocate for something better or not.

Re: Interstate 94
Agree with all this. I am torn between whether the effort to remove this stretch of 94 benefits the removal movement by starting a discussion that the region hasn’t seriously had before, making it easier to remove a different freeway even if this one doesn’t succeed. Or if it harms the movement by ...

Re: Interstate 94
It did happen when 35W was closed, though. Park and Portland got their buffered bike lanes turned into overflow lanes, and even so I heard a lot from my south metro coworkers about how bad Lyndale and Blaisdell were for those years. I think there are real differences in traffic reactions between te...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Whatever happened to the Bike Coalition? You never hear about them anymore. I am sure I am missing the joke, but they are Our Streets Minneapolis now, and they have been pretty prominent in pushing for the return of 6th Ave N and replacing 94 with a boulevard. Or is it that these things are not suf...

I do not. Interpret how you want. Just don't expect anyone else to have to live by your rules.
Do you have an opinion on how 2.2 billion people should interpret their religious texts with respect to abortion and gay rights?

Counter-thought: The three who were not in the room were all strong proponents of rent control, and they 100% knew the vote was happening at this meeting (which, again, had already been rescheduled from Thurs to Weds in efforts to avoid conflicting with Eid...until the holiday changed just 10 days ...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. However, some of the people on the council routinely blame mediocrity as a reason to do nothing (see: Palmisano's logic that because we do a bad job plowing streets, we shouldn't even try to plow sidewalks), so it's not a ma...

There is a lot of law around construction, ranging from extensive and detailed contracts to statutes and regulations to case law interpreting all of that.

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit
Dedicated turn lanes are good, actually. It boggles my mind that some people are against 4-3 conversions. The Lyndale one is such an improvementConstruction on Lake Street is officially underway. The 4-3 conversion is not going over well on Nextdoor.

Re: Do we really have a massive housing shortage?
Especially in the city, we are very short on townhomes, which lots of people like to live in because they don't want to be responsible for maintenance. The lack of supply is driving up prices to the point a lot of people are either having to put up with living in condos and townhouses

Re: Minneapolis 2023 Elections - City Council
As someone not particularly enthused to add another 25-year old DSA member to the City Council, I hope someone at least gives Aurin a run for her money. If she wins and conducts herself like Andrew Johnson e.g. being a swing vote between the progressive* wing and the more moderate wing, she'll be a...

Re: Minneapolis Street Design
I live two blocks off Bryant. The whole time the construction was in progress none of us could figure out what the hell they were doing. Only after it progressed did we realize the bike lanes were ginormous, almost as big as the street. It's absurd. You've got a one-way narrow lane meandering down ...

The "issues" could largely be solved by eliminating a few on-street parking spaces.Seems there were a lot more issues than "standard capacity fire trucks can't get through".

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
The slider / budget questions were really excellent (and kind of fun) - helps to visualize / quantify the magnitude of the tradeoffs that need to be made in a resource-constrained transit system. Also highlights the weirdness of "geographic equality" (which I read as heavily meaning east/...

Re: Housing Market/Economics - General Topics
I'm going to not terribly helpfully mention that there has been much criticism of that article as well. As for the DOJ enforcement, the Sherman Act requires an agreement in restraint of trade which makes enforcement against "tacit collusion" difficult. Might be a better spot for the FTC to...
