Re: 35W Freeway Lid and Air Rights Development
I'd be happy to start with a lid from 40th to 42nd: expand MLK Park and re-connect 40th across the void. Probably could extend it a bit on each end. I wouldn't want to do anything that would preclude adding a median BRT stop at 38th in the future though Not sure any kind of cap is possible south of...

Re: 35W Freeway Lid and Air Rights Development
Throwing in my hat to get a cap in south around 46th street. Hell, lid the whole thing from Diamond Lake Road to 35th street, then cut and cover into downtown. Anyone know of any specific plans for south Minneapolis, or anywhere else in the cities (other than 94 through Rondo and the downtown/west b...

Re: Minneapolis 311
One of my favorite pastimes is reporting "abandoned vehicles" that I notice near my apartment. I've gotten a couple towed but sometimes they stick a warning letter under the wipers and the owner usually moves it immediately, then I have to wait 3 more days before I report them again... I'...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
Project has been appealed by Herschel Lofts Homeowners Association and NNLL who have hired an attorney (I hope this doesn't indicate a court battle is in the offing). They primarily take issue with the section of the office building over the rail corridor, the presence of the parking ramp, and havi...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
How many built residential projects have been granted a variance to exceed the downtown parking maximum? The Shamrock Portland project is the only one that comes to mind. Plenty of projects have been built without increasing the number of parking spaces downtown. Latitude 45, 100 Hennepin and Soo L...

Re: CPM North Loop Office Building - 419 Washington Ave N / 420 N 3rd St
I sort of blame architects racing to the bottom on fee for willing to be repeatedly bent over by developers. It's a terrible business model that exists in that part of the industry. On the other hand, when you propose something that requires approvals above and beyond what's allowed in the base zon...

Re: CPM North Loop Office Building - 419 Washington Ave N / 420 N 3rd St
I'm not defending the "blocking my view" people, they're idiots. It's a bit different depending on the project I guess. Feel bad for the architects who spent multiple overnights working on perfecting a project, only for it to be killed off by a neighbor.

Re: CPM North Loop Office Building - 419 Washington Ave N / 420 N 3rd St
Man it's a good thing development companies aren't the ones creating the files! You know designers aren't going into design for the money, right? Like screw you if you think that architects are still happy if a project dies. Those projects are like flowers. We care and care for them and want them t...

Re: CPM North Loop Office Building - 419 Washington Ave N / 420 N 3rd St
Wow, every time I open one of these files I'm blown away by how much effort and detail goes into each and every proposal. I can see developers and designers getting incredibly frustrated by NIMBYs after putting in all that work, only to get a response like "it'll block my view". Designers...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Oof. http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2017/01/06/barnes-noble-leaving-nicollet-mall-space-this.html Not a good year for Minneapolis retail. I think the problem with downtown is that the retail is a lot of chain retail stuff that is struggling to survive everywhere, combined with high rent...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
Hopefully when these tenants move into this office building, employees will move downtown and not require car use. If the ramp is not fully used, the next developer will include less and less parking in future projects. You can't force people to not use their cars, you have to let it happen organic...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
For these commercial projects that have tenants that primarily don't live downtown or in the North Loop, I'm not sure the project would even be viable without the additional parking. The train doesn't really serve the neighborhood well and bus service is awful. Seems like it would be a tough sell t...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
I actually think these projects are doing a good job of replacing the parking they're taking with spaces that are pretty hidden from view (short of putting them all underground, which isn't an option here). Even urban neighborhoods need some parking. The train by itself isn't a total solution for t...

Re: United North Loop Office Building - 729 Washington Av N
Really bums me out how many of these projects include a huge pile of parking spaces. Waste of space, encourages car use. There's a shiny new train that services the area, and it's supposed to be an urban neighborhood. With projects like these in just don't think we're ever going to take this neighbo...

Re: Minneapolis Density and Population Growth (500k, etc)
The fickleness of middle class white families when it comes to schools never ceases to amaze me. It's remarkable. I was a sub for MPS about 10 years ago, I went to almost every school in the system, and none of them were "bad." Some of them had some challenges but still had good kids and ...

Re: Minneapolis Density and Population Growth (500k, etc)
That and all of our school districts are pretty good in the region. This kind if stuff reeks of class and racial resentment.Open enrollment - not much reason for people to get so freaky about their districts. It's moot anyway though, city mergers aren't on the horizon.

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map
Are we already assuming that the state and federal governments will kibosh any public transportation funding? I don't think cities should give up that easily.
