Re: Minneapolis Density and Population Growth (500k, etc)
This is OT, but you're hitting on something I've often thought about: the notion of children as precious possessions, to be protected and sheltered, instead of as people who need to experience the world around them to prepare for it. You'll find people all over the spectrum in all sorts of places, ...

What's the opposite of gentrification? Nothing stays static, so a 1960's era apartment complex that hasn't seen significant investment gets cheaper and cheaper and dumpier and dumpier, until eventually something has to give. Options: 1. A non-profit housing provider steps up with a big chunk of gov...

As far as I can tell, the plan was done by a civil engineer, not an architect. I like the concept too, but dislike the design. Is there something about the can-do entrepreneurial spirit of immigrants that prevents them from spending money for quality architectural services?

Re: Apartment Hunting General Discussion
How...how are folks affording these rents? I don't understand it either. Even if you're making 50-60K and the standard deductions are taken from your paycheck (health insurance, 401k, etc.), a studio apartment is still almost half your pay. That seems crazy to me. Are a lot of people just making a ...

Some of the 30 years must have been at a different location, because I remember eating Mexican food at that location when I was in college, and I'm not that old. I've had some really good times at the Blue Nile, but it always seemed a little sketchy. I always get nervous ordering food at a place th...

Lyn-Lake is not Uptown like Henn/Lake is. It was not that long ago Lyn-Lake was undesirable. Crime and drug dealers along with abandoned storefronts sprinkled in with regular businesses. When the the internet cafe Cyber-X opened on the corner (where Cause used to be) in the 1990's it was the beginn...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos
Oops- I stand corrected. I assumed that was a pic first floor patio and didn't saw the 121 and must have assumed it was the condo #.This isn't a 1st floor unit... it's on the 4th floor with access to the building's amenity deck.

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos
I could work with the 80's condo. I don't think it would even be that expensive. The big drawback for me is the first floor location. My guess is that a lot of other women would be turned off by that as well.

The stuff there looks a lot like the items at Room and Board, but with a higher markup. Maybe that's the problem. A lot of people (even the affluent) might pay up to $2K for a couch, but not $3K or $4K.

Re: Minneapolis City Budget FY2015 & FY2016
Except we like to make our taxes as progressive as we can, so charging more for a house with fancy expensive finishes probably roughly correlates with the ability to pay those taxes (obviously it's not a perfect correlation). Remember, taxes are not fees -- there is not a correlation between the us...

Market value up 15% Taxes up 9.5% That's a lot. We've not done any improvements either. I'm surprised I haven't seen more coverage regarding the hikes. Maybe we're unusual. If you don't mind me asking, what neighborhood are you in? We're in the Kingfield neighborhood. Maybe it's all the nice restau...

Re: the cross merge
I agree people need to slow down on residential streets, but on freeways I often find the greatest impediments are actually those driving too slow: 1. merging without getting up to speed, and 2. blocking passing lane on freeway when not passing. I don't really think slower is always safer, though I...

Years ago, before GiGi's, there was a great little butcher shop and bakery (Annabelle's) that had decent, cheap doughnuts. I loved that butcher shop. There was a Vietnamese restaurant on the SE corner as well, but then GVP took over the corner when the owners retired. I'm pretty sure they owned anot...

The Wedge does suck. Mississippi Market in St Paul charges less than The Wedge for the same or similar products. Plus the snobbish bs from customers and staff is kept at a minimum. I'm a member of the Wedge, but rarely go there any more, unless I need some bulk lentils/beans/oatmeal, etc. I get a v...

It makes me kind of sad that 3821 Washburn is being torn down (or maybe it already has). It's a nice looking Tudor. I'm surprised that's coming down.
